Birdie?

Is ‘birdie’ okay for a girl? I’m not too sure on the name extended e.g. birdette but I love it for a baby girl!

My mother thinks it’s a cruel name and that it could subject her to bullying?

Please help!!!!

It’s pretty terrible. Bridie is nicer.

Birdette sounds like a children’s puppet. Isn’t Birdie a nickname for Elizabeth? Can’t you just use it as a nickname?

MKWarrier · 21/02/2024 17:30

Cute for a family nickname but not for a proper name in my opinion. Could you call her something like Wren and then Birdie could be an affectionate nickname?

clickyourredshoestogether3times · 21/02/2024 17:30

Hideous

Roundaboot · 21/02/2024 17:31

It's a bit of a guilty pleasure of mine, along with Queenie but I'm not sure that I could ever use either on an actual child! As an adult woman, would you want your name to be Birdie?
Could you use a proper name with nn Birdie? A Google tells me that it's a nickname for Elizabeth apparently.

Onelife2024 · 21/02/2024 17:31

Sorry op, I wouldn’t like to be called birdie personally, so that would rule it out for me. Could it be a nn for something like Bridget? That would give your daughter options as she got older?

GoodVibesHere · 21/02/2024 17:31

Oh please, you can't call a child Birdie.

BadgeronaMoped · 21/02/2024 17:32

It's a bit out there. I like it as a nickname, like in Mad Men (Elizabeth as a PP has pointed out), gives you lots of options, Elizabeth does.

Porfirio · 21/02/2024 17:36

Birdie would be nice as she grows up if she is a sweet little fluttery slip of a girl but if she's likely to be a bit of a lump then yes it's very cruel as she'll be called Big Bird.

Bridie as already suggested is much nicer.

Floralnomad · 21/02/2024 17:37

I’m with your mother .

AyrshireTryer · 21/02/2024 17:39

Imagine shouting it across a crowded supermarket.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 21/02/2024 17:42

I've just watched series 1 of Kin, in which the 50 something aunt of the Dublin gangster family is called Birdie. In her case it seems to be a nickname for Bridget.

I'm with your Mum here. It's not a great name to have on your birth certificate and live with until old age. Far better choices out there.

DisforDarkChocolate · 21/02/2024 17:43

Well I'm with you @Babytalkx because I think it's lovely.

Aquamarine1029 · 21/02/2024 17:47

I'm not crazy about Birdie, but I do like Dovey. I watched a documentary about a remarkable woman named Dovey Roundtree and I've had affection for the name ever since.

Olika · 21/02/2024 17:47

I really don't like it.

Anjea · 21/02/2024 17:49

Dreadful. She'd be called Dickie

ParanoidGynodroid · 21/02/2024 17:49

You love it for a baby girl? Baby girls grow up to be women!
Its a cute nickname, but as a full name I don’t think it’s suitable, sorry OP.

Others have suggested Bridie. Do not choose this if you ever plan to live in Scotland!

Catlord · 21/02/2024 17:50

I really don't like it, sorry. Flappy and silly. Bridget nn Bridie is lovely.

Mittens1717 · 21/02/2024 17:50

Lord no

Jessforless · 21/02/2024 17:50

I actually really like it…

AdaColeman · 21/02/2024 17:52

Listen to your Mother.

Didn't think of Forfar Bridies! Still think it's a lovely name tho

mitogoshi · 21/02/2024 17:57

Listen to your mum!

My advice is think about that cute baby applying for good job? Think about them being in a profession with clients and business cards ... would you choose a solicitor called Birdie? Your GP? Kee nicknames as those and give proper first names so the child has a choice when grown.

Before you think this is far fetched, I've worked in hr and we really did filter the hundreds of applicants by name, too silly or childlike and my boss stuck them through the shedder.

Clarabellawilliamson · 21/02/2024 18:04

I know a kid called Birdie, don't know if it's short for anything. She doesn't get teased, bullied or called Dickie! You could have it as a nickname for Bernadette. But you could also have Bernie, which I love more. There's a cleaner at school called Bernie, and she has 10'kids and her name is so incongruous to me, it's made me love the name even more!

TinyYellow · 21/02/2024 18:06

It’s awful.
