Birdie?

Is ‘birdie’ okay for a girl? I’m not too sure on the name extended e.g. birdette but I love it for a baby girl!

My mother thinks it’s a cruel name and that it could subject her to bullying?

Please help!!!!

Even Bridie would be better and that’s not saying much.

At best it's a nickname for Bridget, Elizabeth, Beatrice or Bertha.

At worst it's a silly name in its own right.

Shes child number 9 out of ten on a family YouTube channel.

I met a woman in a hospital in her late 90s called Birdie, I liked it, it was sweet and it suited her.
But she was very small and very very frail and she did feel almost birdlike to move. It might have a different feel on someone young and strong.

Before you think this is far fetched, I've worked in hr and we really did filter the hundreds of applicants by name, too silly or childlike and my boss stuck them through the shedder.

This is ridiculous and very judgemental. A name isn't the individual's fault. I don't know of any reputable company that would do this. Some companies assess applications 'blind' to make sure this sort of prejudice doesn't take place.

I've also worked in HR and I find that hard to believe. Not that you'd ever hear a tall tale on Mumsnet...

And I'd happily pick a solicitor or GP called Birdie. She's qualified in her field presumably

I would really hate to introduce myself as Birdie, I think it's cute as a nickname but would want a more solid name to fall back on! Robyn or Wren could work?

Don't do it to the poor child! Lovely as a nickname, esp if a bright-eyed, intelligent, delicate little thing, but not as a real name. You could go Bridget / Bridie or something like AmBER where the final syllable gives the lead in to the first syllable of BIRdie, iyswim.

I love it but couldn't use it because it's too out-there and gets the reaction you've seen on this thread

Yes again I wonder if the Registrar will allow the name, hopefully it will be misunderstood and registered as Bridie.

Agree with Bridie which is actually a lovely name

Use birdie as a nickname but give her a proper name too , in time her physique/personality might not suit it

I sometimes call my dd Birdie (she's an Elizabeth) but then she has many nicknames 😄

Brodie is a much nicer name.

My daughter actually has a friend called Birdie (she's 4). I did a bit of a double take when we first met her because, well, come on.

It's not short for anything and I suppose it is quite cute on a four year old, but when she's a 50 year old accountant or lawyer or something it's going to sound ridiculous.

A Bridie is a kind of pasty where I live, so I wouldn't call a child that either!

Maybe it is well known but I've never heard of anyone called Birdie other than David Tennant's child 🤷
