How would you pronounce Ivi?

Ivy or Evie? Or differently?

I know it’s a difficult name in the Uk.

However, for your information Ivi is the goddess and personification of eternal youth in Greek mythology. She is the daughter of Zeus andHera and the wife of the Greek hero Hercules.

We live in central London where you can find all sort of different/non British names, so I doubt anyone would bat an eyelid.

My only concern is how would most naturally pronounce it.

Great responses and I think most tend to associate with Ivy, which I agree that is a beautiful name - but we are not British!

Er that's Hebe, at least it is in English.

Are you expecting your DD to grow up here? If so I'd go for Ivy or Evie.

I've known a handful of children with two names depending on where they are. Angel comes to mind.

Are you greek? If so then her name in greece will be spelled with greek letters,

This. Sounding like the middle of the name Olivia.

greendaisie · 18/02/2024 21:46

I'd say Ivi like Ee v ee

greendaisie · 18/02/2024 21:47

Like Kiwi!

LittleMissSleepyUK · 17/02/2024 18:33

I read it as I-v-i

Me too

redastherose · 18/02/2024 22:20

Ivy was my nanna's name and she hated it, got called clinging ivy and climbing ivy etc she changed to her middle name of Jane as soon as she was old enough but her mother and older sister still insisted on calling her a name she hated.

suntannedsnowballsinhell · 17/02/2024 18:34

It looks like a form of contraception or fertility treatment

IVI

IUI

IUD

IVF

I thought similar - I’d pronounce it IV like the drip

DPotter · 18/02/2024 22:32

Former nurse - I see IVI - intravenous infusion.

Ivy is a good name - don't try to make in unique - it will just look odd.

You DD will have a life time of explaining and spelling out her name

noodlesfortea · 17/02/2024 18:58

Ivy 100%.

You may want to be aware that I.V.I. is a common abbreviation of intravaginal insemination in the fertility world. Not a nickname she'd appreciate at school 😂

Yup. https://www.ivi.uk/clinics/london/

I read it as I-V-I 🤷🏻‍♀️
Definitely just use Ivy

afdtyujnb · 26/02/2024 22:24

I - V - I, IV Infusion, Intra-venous infusion?

YourLocal · 27/02/2024 21:16

Absolutely wouldn’t think to pronounce Evie it looks like it would be pronounced Ivy xx

MissHoollie · 27/02/2024 21:20

This is an old Scottish boys name.
Pronounced .
ivvi
Like iffy but with the V

Mistyhill · 27/02/2024 21:27

Ivvy

with a short i

Imisscoffee2021 · 27/02/2024 21:31

As other have said I read it as I.V.I as in a form of infertility treatment, intravaginal insemination.

Porfirio · 27/02/2024 22:31

Ivi to rhyme with Divvie.

Noun. divvie (plural divvies) (Britain, slang, derogatory) A stupid person; someone of low intelligence.

DiscoBeat · 27/02/2024 22:54

I thought it said IVF!

Don't make your poor child have to correct everyone daily for the next 90 years!

Maddy70 · 28/02/2024 06:57

I would pronounce a ivi.

Its ridiculous through a lifetime of mispronunciation.

I as iglu

Tatonka · 28/02/2024 07:00

Personally I like non British names, as they are generally very boring, overused and for old people. I think though choosing a name similar to Ivy, which is a popular name is bound to cause confusion

GoodOldEmmaNess · 28/02/2024 07:09

I'd pronounce the first syllable to rhyme with "sieve" and the second syllable like the word "if" but without the eff sound. In other words a bit of a mess.

Alternatively I'd pronounce it 56, because written down it just looks like Roman numerals.

LydiaTomos · 28/02/2024 07:18

I would pronounce it however way the parents or child told me it was pronounced. It's a name from you heritage OP, no reason to use a different name or an English spelling.

Anyone important in your child's life will pronounce it correctly. Anyone else can be told how to pronounce it.

My children have Welsh names, some English people have to be told how to pronounce them, it"s fine. There are children in school with them with Irish names that were unfamiliar before we met them. We were told how to pronounce the names and that's fine too.

Some posters seem to think that English names are "correct" and everything else is strange. Not true at all. Good luck OP.

determinedtomakethiswork · 28/02/2024 07:30

I would be quite superstitious about naming my child something that meant eternal youth.

pontipinemum · 28/02/2024 12:16

@Namedrama87 I think like others I would pronounce it Ivy but if you corrected me to Evie, I would get it right every time after that. I'm not British though, I'm Irish

I think if you are Greek and love the name go for it. I have lots of Irish family living in various parts of the UK and they have gone for Irish names. People can say them and mostly try get it right

Tikkamarsalaplease · 29/02/2024 13:55

Please reconsider.
