How would you pronounce Ivi?

Ivy or Evie? Or differently?

I (the same sound as ‘it’) V I (again the same sound as ‘it). So IHVih (which sounds so basic with my strong Lancashire accent, but potentially lovely in other accents!) Or maybe Ih-V-eye at a push. Basically I’d have to ask!

The first I doesn’t look like it would be pronounced as eye- as in Ivy without the Y on the end. I definitely read it as the phonetic I for some reason!

Namedrama87 · 17/02/2024 19:38

Thank you all! Ivi in Greek is pronounced as the British Evie…

Oh dear… what a confusion!

I think I will suggest to my DP another name!

Why not call her Evie?

What about Evie? Means the same thing to you and gets the pronunciation you want, seems perfect?

I found this when I searched: https://www.pronouncenames.com/ivi just like Ivy.

edit- https://www.names.org/n/ivi/about oh this one has a different pronunciation so now I’m confused!

Edited

The second link has the “right” Greek accent.

Ivvy like in the middle sound of Olivia

Edited

Yes, that’s how I’d pronounce it too.

Oh, if I’d known Greek then the ‘I’ would be an ‘ee ’ sound, so then ee-vee. I missed that first time round!

I think it’s fine - it’s not a difficult one when people know, it’s more when they assume British pronunciation that it becomes confused initially but nothing that’s hard to correct!

DarkDarkNight · 17/02/2024 19:43

It reminded me initially of IUI - intrauterine insemination. Having googled there is a term intravaginal insemination (IVI).

I would pronounce it as Ivy, it’s a lovely name but please use the proper spelling.

Namedrama87 · 17/02/2024 19:44

Yes Evie is the perfect British spelling for the sound we want.

It is a bit far from the Greek Ivi in terms of translation but we can’t have it all I guess…

I wondered if you were Greek. There is a girl called Ivi in my DD4s class that is pronounced Evie

WinterSprings · 17/02/2024 19:53

Evie is a lovely name 🥰

SlightlygrumpyBettyswaitress · 17/02/2024 20:08

Iffy only with a v sound.

DoILookThrilled · 17/02/2024 20:10

MaloneMeadow · 17/02/2024 18:28

As in Ivy

Whatever it is it’s awful!

Classic 1st response nails it

OctaviaRedQueen · 17/02/2024 20:13

I would assume it was Ivy, a bit how like Lily can be spelt Lili.

IHopeYouStepOnALegPiece · 17/02/2024 20:35

I actually once Nannied an Ivi in North London about 9y ago, generally she got Ee-vee (how it was pronounced) but very rarely Ivy but it wasn’t that unusual to get Ivvy (rhymes with skivvy)

Flossflower · 17/02/2024 20:54

Namedrama87 · 17/02/2024 18:51

I know it’s a difficult name in the Uk.

However, for your information Ivi is the goddess and personification of eternal youth in Greek mythology. She is the daughter of Zeus andHera and the wife of the Greek hero Hercules.

We live in central London where you can find all sort of different/non British names, so I doubt anyone would bat an eyelid.

My only concern is how would most naturally pronounce it.

Great responses and I think most tend to associate with Ivy, which I agree that is a beautiful name - but we are not British!

You mean Hebe. The equivalent in the English language to have the same approximate spelling would be Evie. Ήβη does not really translate to Ivi.

Yep, I read it as this also.

I know this isn't the question but in what world does ivvey rhyme with ibbey?

FayCarew · 17/02/2024 21:21

MN world @WeAreWarriorsWeAreWarriors . it rhymes with divvy.

@Namedrama87 , Evie is very popular in the OK. It's pretty but so overused.

bakewellbride · 17/02/2024 21:48

I read it as the fertility treatment and I've taught supply in central London!

Toddlerteaplease · 17/02/2024 22:04

I just see it as IntraVenous Infusion.

Caspianberg · 18/02/2024 06:37

In German it’s the same pronunciation on Ivy.

Ivy in German is ‘Ee-vee’
Evie in German is ‘ay-fee’

So you can’t just use Evie if you wanted Evie sound, you would use Ivy.
Ivi would be - ‘Ee-fee’ though I think.

geoger · 18/02/2024 07:32

You can still use the name but have an English spelling - Evie - and a Greek spelling - Ήβη when using it in Greek speaking/writing situations eg Church etc. The Greek alphabet is a completely different script so it really won’t matter and Evie will be translated into Ήβη just like Peter/Πετρος or Helen/Ελενι

SarahAndGoose · 18/02/2024 07:33

LittleMissSleepyUK · 17/02/2024 18:33

I read it as I-v-i

Well that cleared things up 😂
