How would you pronounce Ivi?

Ivy or Evie? Or differently?

Looks like a delivery company name. It's ridiculous.

Namedrama87 · 17/02/2024 18:40

We are not British from the Uk , just living here. I appreciate the confusion though.

Ivi - Iv vy to rhyme with livvy

Reddog1 · 17/02/2024 18:43

It looks like a medical procedure or something and engineer would talk about so I’d say, “I, V, I”. And then ask what it was.

Ivy is a nice name. Don’t muck about with it, there’s no need.

notacooldad · 17/02/2024 18:44

Sonora25

It’s not a name though
But it is.

TeaKitten · 17/02/2024 18:46

Before I clicked on the thread I thought it was a fertility treatment. It’s not a name spelling, try Ivy

slowdaysloegin · 17/02/2024 18:48

I.V.I

Sounds like a company name who you'd call in as consultants or a factory manufacturing some random product.

Namedrama87 · 17/02/2024 18:51

I know it’s a difficult name in the Uk.

However, for your information Ivi is the goddess and personification of eternal youth in Greek mythology. She is the daughter of Zeus andHera and the wife of the Greek hero Hercules.

We live in central London where you can find all sort of different/non British names, so I doubt anyone would bat an eyelid.

My only concern is how would most naturally pronounce it.

Great responses and I think most tend to associate with Ivy, which I agree that is a beautiful name - but we are not British!

Eevee.

I think it's a tricky one for British people to assimilate. Too many options on pronunciation and looks a bit like a medical acronym.

InsidiousRasperry · 17/02/2024 18:54

Iv-ee, like iffy.

In the UK she’s known as Hebe I think?

Namedrama87 · 17/02/2024 18:56

@SP2024 Yes that’s right but this sounds completely different to the original Greek name , hence we are trying to retain the same sound.

Ivy 100%.

You may want to be aware that I.V.I. is a common abbreviation of intravaginal insemination in the fertility world. Not a nickname she'd appreciate at school 😂

Ithinkitstimeforbed · 17/02/2024 19:01

I’ve been pronouncing it Ih-vee in my head as I’ve read through this thread, I’m about to google what’s the correct way as I’ve never come across it before.

They would pronounce it wrong and absolutely would bat an eye lid. Doesn’t matter how diverse the area of London is, it’s a fertility treatment too. And living in the UK it will naturally get Ivy, which is a perfectly ok name.

TeaKitten · 17/02/2024 19:02

What even is the ‘correct’ way to pronounce it?

newlaptop12 · 17/02/2024 19:03

It's not a very nice thing to do to saddle your kid with a name which she will spend her whole adult life going 'no, you spell it like this' - if you're planning to stay in the UK, I wouldn't use it.

minipie · 17/02/2024 19:03

Logically I’d say Ivvy (rhyming with Livvy or skivvy)

But I might also assume it’s a “yoonique” spelling of Ivy.

I definitely wouldn’t think to pronounce it Evie (if that’s what you’re aiming for). Until you told me to when of course I would.

SENDhelp2023 · 17/02/2024 19:04

just spell it Ivy. See also Poppy not Poppi

LolaSmiles · 17/02/2024 19:06

Ivvy like ih-vee
Or
Ivy

I'd be surprised to hear it pronounced as Evie.

Xyz1234567 · 17/02/2024 19:07

Would guess Ivy and smile, whilst internally wondering why some parents are such wankers.

Are you Greek? If so, you do know the modern meaning of the word; it would unfair to give this name to a child. So many wonderful Greek names to choose from...

sprigatito · 17/02/2024 19:11

I'd pronounce it ivvy unless told otherwise.

TeaKitten · 17/02/2024 19:13

Even the baby name websites say it’s derived from the Ivy plant or means ‘gracious’
