We're having a girl, due in 3 weeks, and despite having a short list for half the pregnancy we're no further on & I'm not sure any of the name we have are quite right so any other ideas or suggestions are very welcome.

The short list so far is:

  • Abigail
  • Amelia
  • Imogen
  • Eleanor
  • Ella
  • Emily
  • Matilda

I like Emily and Amelia, they are both very pretty. Matilda is also an excellent name. I have never been a fan of Abigail and Eleanor.

Are you in the UK? I ask because of your username!

That’s a lovely list, OP! We have a Matilda, and have considered many of the others for DD2. Of your list I like Abigail, Emily and Eleanor best. I suspect I would like Imogen but I used to know an unpleasant one so that puts me off - clearly not an issue for you!

Other names on my list are:

Alice
Jessica
Felicity
Kate
Laura
Isabelle
Sophie

Could you try to narrow it down to a final 3 and then see how you feel when she arrives?

Hi @MKWarrier 👋 I posted on your thread yesterday and thought OP's list looked similar to yours!

OP, in case you want to search for it, MKW's thread title was "first attempt at a girl's name list". You may like some of the suggestions there.

Lovely shortlist!

My favourites are Imogen, Abigail, Emily and Ella - I love all of these!

Amelia and Eleanor are also lovely, just more commonly used recently, if that matters to you?

Matilda is a nice name, I’m just not sure the short versions work as well for adults, and as it’s a 3 syllable name I’d prefer to have a “grown up” short version, personally.

Other ideas -

Harriet
Georgia
Alice
Lucy
Clara
annabel
Eloise
Jessica
Penelope
Leonie
Jennifer
Helena
Audrey
Layla

I think you have a good list of names and perhaps you can choose when she is born.

Abigail - lovely
Amelia - overused
Imogen - not keen on Immy
Eleanor - will be Ellie
Ella - overused
Emily - ok but has been popular for decades
Matilda - not keen on Tilly or Tilda

Suggestion: Jessica, Emma, Harriet

Matilda is NOT okay. It would set the poor girl up for failure and disappointment as she would expect to have magical powers like Matilda in the book, movie, and musical, “Matilda”. Furthermore, this story touches on themes of abuse from the parents towards Matilda, so would likely reflect negatively on you. Imogen sounds rather similar to “Imagine” so may cause issues around derealisation. She may believe she is imaginary, but it could be worth a try! The others sound brilliant.

I also really like Esther and Rachel if you’re looking for other suggestions
