Marvin?

Opinions? It reminds me of Marvin Gaye, plus it has Welsh origins, which I like. I think Marv is a cute nickname.

I think Marvin the Martian, and I don’t love the sound I’m afraid.

The Welsh name is Merfyn (MERR-vin, merr like in merry), anglicised as Mervyn
Merfyn is ok, Mervyn a bit of a grandad name.

my first thought was Marvin Humes from JLS. I think it's fine, if you like it go for it. As with all names some people will alove it and some will hate it but the only opinion that really matters is yours and your partners.
Traditional names are all the go these days. Plus he'll probably be the only Marvin in class at school as its not mega popular. I was one of 4 of my name in class and I feel my name is quite boring as its too common.

I think Marvin is a nice name.

I love it. In an adorable baby grandad way. I think it will be very cool.

On the one hand it makes me think of Starvin' Marvin from South Park but on the other it was Meat Loaf's real name, and therefore cool.

Probably not relevant to the thread, but I prefer Myrddin (MURR-thin, Murr like in Murray, th like in that, the etc) to Merfyn.

I heard it thru' the grapevine that Marvin is quite a cool name.

Also as far as I’m concerned ‘cute’ is something to avoid. It’s too close to twee / childish.

I don't think paranoid android or other associations are particularly bad. The South Park one isn't great, but I watched it and didn't remember at all.

I agree about 'cuteness', however I think Marv is a cute nn for a little boy, but also sounds quite strong for a man.

I think there’ll be grapevine jokes galore because the JLS Marvin isn’t famous enough to get Marvin Gaye out of one’s mind. Maybe people who are big South Park or Meatloaf fans will not make the immediate MG connection, but many others will. If you can put up with that, then it’s a nice enough name.

Kids born today won't be that familiar with Marvin Gaye, will they?

I went to school with a Marvin many years ago. No one had any negative associations for his name, he was a lovely lad…off to Google to see what he’s up to.

I can't believe I'd forgotten about Marvin the Paranoid Android. He's a great character. That swings me in favour of Marvin as a name.

At least if anyone tries to take the piss he can say "Here I am, brain the size of a planet and they want me to......"

My sister had a boyfriend whose name was one letter different from Marvin Gaye. That's all I see with this name but Mr Gaye was pretty cool!
