Sadie?

We love this name if we have a DD. Well known but certainly not overused. I have been stopped in my tracks as on another thread people are saying they think of bad connotations as it has the words ‘sad’ and ‘die’ in it. Really? There are lots of names that are similar. Think Jodie, Elodie etc.

It got me thinking about other names that might also be seen badly by some, Thea sounds like fear. Violet - violent. Claudia - the name means lame. Richard - rich / hard if you break it down into two words but it’s not really something I would ever think to do. They’re all nice enough names that I wouldn’t think twice about it if I heard, including Sadie, but am I in the minority?

I don’t know if other people thinking that means it’s a poor choice, and would hate to lumber negative meanings onto a child. Does it really matter if you like a name?

Sadie is nice - I don’t think of sad or die at all. It’s not pronounced that way. Like you say there are over names that if you over-analysed you could attribute negative connotations.

I think its a beautiful name and I dont think sad or die with it.

I love the name Sadie. I had a wonderful Aunt Sadie who was gentle, kind and glamorous so I always have good connections to the name. It’s beautiful.

My friend is called Mercedes. This is shortened to Sadie. Sadie isn't pronounced or spelt anything like Sadie. I like the name

I like it, it's different enough she won't be in a class full of Sadies, without being so off the wall that people can't spell or pronounce it.

I think it’s great name, cool but also elegant in a 1920’s glamour sort of way. The issues you mention wouldn’t even have occurred to me.

I saw a Baby On Board sign yesterday with the name Sadie on, i just had a passing thought of 'that's not a usual baby name'.

It was a totally neutral thought, definitely never seen 'sad' or 'die' in it. If you love it, go for it. People love to dissect names that they don't personally love.

It’s a lovely name - love the sound of it, it suits all ages, familiar without being overused, not dated to any particular decade, not too long / frilly, doesn’t need shortening - not many names have all of those qualities.

I completely agree that if you overthink many names they can sound like other words / be broken down into other words etc… (including both my name and my dd’s name) but in real life that’s never been an issue for either of us. If everyone worried about that we’d all be called the same 10 names and that would be very boring and confusing!

I think it’s lovely. Wouldn’t get to ‘sad’ ‘die’ - I think people are reaching for reasons to poo poo it there.

I think it's lovely. A 'normal' name that wouldn't stick out as ridiculous for an adult, cute for a child, and not overused.

I really like Sadie and definitely would not associate it with 'sad' or 'die'. It's completely different pronunciation.

Lovely name. Not in a million years would I make connection with sad or die. That must be people realllllly overthinking it?

I think it’s timeless, elegant and classy. There won’t be several in the class, she’ll be able to learn to spell it easily and she won’t have it shortened ( much)

I don't like it at all - all I see is Sad, so I pronounce it as Sad-ie in my head.

I would never have thought about ‘sad’ or ‘die’ because its pronounced differently. I like the name and only know one who is in her 30s now. I do know a few dogs called Sadie but I don’t see that as a negative either!

Use it OP, there are names I would advise against but Sadie really isn’t one of them!
