Do these names work with this middle name?

Pregnant with our first. If they are a girl, their middle name will be Jean, that’s a non negotiable for us.

We like

Erin
Nina
Eva
Freya
Zara
Martha

Of the list, Martha is my least fave I think. Not sure Erin Jean flows nicely given its four letters and both ending in N.

Eva = love it, but is it a bit too nothingy and close to the popularity of the likes of Ada, Ivy etc?

Nina = too many eee sounds with Jean?

I might be overthinking. Freya Jean - fraying jeans… And Zara Jean - an item you can buy from a high street store 😂 or would nobody else be thinking of those associations with the names?

Welcome any input!

I really like all of your first name choices and personally would just choose which first name you like best as the middle name is so rarely used that how the names sound together won’t be a day to day issue.

If how they sound together matters a lot to you then I like Eva Jean best - I know Eva is similar to other popular names at the moment, but they’re popular for a reason and it wouldn’t put me off using it personally.

Erin and Freya are also gorgeous names - I think they sound absolutely fine with Jean and wouldn’t have thought of the Frayed Jeans thing!

Zara and Nina are nice too - if you wanted them to sound better with Jean you could maybe have two middle names - they are short enough names to get away with it - e.g. Nina Martha Jean?

I do think I would immediately make the connection of Zara being a shop. Otherwise they’re all nice names. They do remind me a bit of Norma Jean, but if that doesn’t bother you. I like a longer middle name with Jean.

My favourite of your choices is Freya Jean

WaitingForMojo · 01/02/2024 23:31

Ooh and Martha Jean, that’s lovely

taratatata · 02/02/2024 09:01

Thank you both.

I do think my favourite is Eva or Erin. DH likes Erin best. We like Nina but it’s definitely more out there.

Ours was always going to be Jean middle name too, after a great-grandmother on each side. It goes with loads I've found. In the end we have a Zoe Jean.

NachosAndCheese · 02/02/2024 09:23

Love Eva but there are sooooo many Evies, Evelyns, Avas and Ivys.

Nina is nice, don’t hear it as much. Erin is also popular, doesn’t flow quite as well with Jean.

KirstenBlest · 02/02/2024 09:36

Middle names aren't really used, the first name and surname are used a lot.
Pick the first name that goes best with the surname.

Erin - not keen, seems a bit harsh sounding but nothingy
Nina - like
Eva - Evie/Ava/Eva/Ivy names are everywhere. Meh
Freya - overused to the point of being meh
Zara - like but it's the name of a clothes shop chain
Martha - best from your list

Doublebiscuit77 · 02/02/2024 10:03

Erin - not a fan
Nina - I like it
Eva - I've only met one, now in her teens. I think people think it's popular so steer away from it. I reckon it will be lower in the next name stats. Really nice name.
Freya - I love Freya
Zara - ok
Martha - ok

I know an Annie Jean which goes quite well.

HoHoHoliday · 02/02/2024 10:46

I think Erin Jean is perfect! The others, no, for the reasons you've already given yourself. Erin is a lovely name, Jean is wonderful and well due a resurrection, and I don't think the two 'n' endings matters.

MaloneMeadow · 02/02/2024 13:17

I adore Eva, but I might be biased as I have one! She’s 19 now and really loves her name. Contrary to what everyone on MN says it’s not that popular, she’s only ever met 2 other Evas in her whole life. Ava and Eve/Evie seem to be much more common. Ivy is a completely different name in my opinion - and not one that I’m a fan of!!

FailingAtEverythingAgain · 02/02/2024 13:23

Freya is a bit "frayed jeans" IMO. I didn't make the "Zara (brand) jeans" connection at all.

FWIW we didn't name DD Ada - a name we loved - because we were worried about it being too trendy/overused. She's 15 months now and in all the baby groups, nursery, her older brother's nursery etc we've never met an Ada! I do have a bit of name regret, so my advice would be if you like Eva (a lovely name BTW that goes nicely with Jean) then go for it.

My favourite from your list is Nina Jean - I think the double "ee" sound is a plus. It's sort of rhythmic/musical.

CrispsandCheeseSandwich · 02/02/2024 13:26

I agree that Erin Jean doesn't flow as well, but it is my favourite of your names.

People hardly ever say the first and middle name together out loud, so I don't think it matters if they flow together well.

ginasevern · 02/02/2024 14:21

Martha Jean works best.

lairyfights9 · 02/02/2024 14:23

I think Nina Jean sounds cool 😊

Pozz · 02/02/2024 19:06

Have you thought about having two middle names to break it up e.g.

Nina Rose Jean
Eva Louise Jean

Don't do this.

Crunchymum · 02/02/2024 20:57

Jean would be one of my front runners as a first name. Love it.

DesertSnow · 02/02/2024 21:03

I think Eva Jean goes best, but if your DH likes Erin best and it's one of your faves, I'd go with that. You hardly ever have to say the full name anyway. You could also wait till you see her and see if any of them fit her best? Congrats :)

theduchessofspork · 02/02/2024 23:26

I think Zara goes best but agree you can’t really do that

Erin Jean is the next best I think. Erin’s a bit 90s though, like Lauren

Eva Jean is alright but SO many Eve/Evas

Nina is too rhymey, Freya doesn’t go and Martha is a bit dreary

Others maybe

Tara Jean
Nancy Jean
Lois Jean
Frances Jean (Frankie?)

Zoe Jean
Stella Jean
Polly Jean (PJ Harvey not a bad namesake)
Philippa Jean (Pippa)
Victoria Jean (Vita)
Vivienne Jean (Vivi)

TinkerTinkerbelle · 03/02/2024 21:37

Nancy Jean is so cute! Bobbie Jean is cute also. Of your suggestions Martha Jean sounds best.

LancaLass · 03/02/2024 21:42

Love Nina Jean!

junebirthdaygirl · 03/02/2024 21:51

Really love Martha Jean

Sleepnplay · 04/02/2024 09:00

I'd be willing to bet none of my friends would remember what my kids middle names are. Unless you choose to use her middle name lots day to day, she will just be 'Martha' or 'Zara' 99.9% of the time.

On that basis, unless the 1st/middle name combo sounds really silly together, I'd just go with whatever your favourite is.

So, I'd pick Nina, followed by Zara.

KirstenBlest · 04/02/2024 11:03
