Need an R name for baby boy.
What's your opinion on Roman? Ronan? Reuben?

You have a point there @wingsofabird , and Rose, Rosie, Romy etc are popular for girls.

We’ve got a Reggie and our second born would have been Rory if I could’ve got over the double R’s - after sooo many people saying he was going to be Ronnie 🙄

Roman seems to be quite a common name, a lot of the mean girl from school all seemed to have a Roman. I like Ronan, and also Rowan.

muddyford · 03/02/2024 08:04

Robert
Reuben
Rafe (a multitude of different spellings)

FoxtrotOscarFoxtrotOscar · 03/02/2024 08:05

Ronan makes me think of Ronan Keating. Barf.

Rupert
Roland
Raymond
Rolo
Reginald
Royson
Richard

@Kwam31 , not one Rhodri I know says Rodri, and not one Rhys says Rees. The letter Rh doesn't sound like R.

I've known at least 5 boys/men called Rhys who pronounced it 'Rees'. And none who pronounced it any other way. And I've also known 1 Rhodri who pronounced it exactly as you said it shouldn't be pronounced.

wherearemywellingtons · 03/02/2024 16:03

In fact, I even had a Welsh ex boyfriend who lived in Wales, spoke Welsh, and pronounced his name "Rees" so I'm really confused by the post.

Lovemusic82 · 03/02/2024 16:05

I like Roman but prefer Rowen.

KirstenBlest · 03/02/2024 16:46

@wherearemywellingtons , he might have done depending on where he was from, and to what level he spoke Welsh (big difference between 'did it at school' and 'speaking it throughout daily life' . If he was from the Valleys he'd probably say Rees. Also whether or not your ear would distinguish between R and Rh, and between 'y' and 'ee' (or 'w' and 'wh' etc) - not everyone hears the difference.

The name is an old Welsh one and hugely popular, and the Welsh-speakers don't say it as Rees.

It's a bit like if I said I knew several Richards who say their name as Rich-add and several Thomases who say it as Tomos (I do, several of both). It will sound Hmm to others.

If you said to me 'But Richard is not pronounced as Rich-add and Thomas isn't pronounced Tom-os', I wouldn't argue about it.

I'd think Rhisiart and Tomos are nicer versions for a Welsh person.

mydogspooeybum · 03/02/2024 18:55

Nay

I like Roman but double check how it sounds with your surname incase it starts to sound like a place. Also love Raffa (Rafael/Raphael) & the Irish name Rory is sweet too

mrssunshinexxx · 09/02/2024 07:08
