George has been a clear contender for a long time but I’m wondering if it’s a bit too unremarkable. That might not be a problem, as I know he would be our lovely little George.

Other names we are considering, but most of them one of us likes and the other is less sure. No particular order:

Evan
Owen
Ewan
Alec
Alex
Zachary / Zack

Surname is two syllables ending in ‘er’ sound.

Thanks in advance!

Alec or Evan

NachosAndCheese · 29/01/2024 13:23

I like Alex and Zac.

I know soooo many George’s.

Merrow · 29/01/2024 13:24

I'm biased, but Ewan! Next choices would be Evan or Alec.

I personally have never liked George, but if it's what you like then go for it.

GrandDuchessOfBillericay · 29/01/2024 13:48

They are all nice, solid names op.
Personally I like Alexander nn Alex or Xander best
Ewan
Owen/Zach around the same
Even

Onelife2024 · 29/01/2024 13:59

I have a George! Absolutely love his name! Funnily enough he is the only George in his school but there are 2 Koby’s in his class, so you can never tell with popularity!

ohididntrealise · 29/01/2024 14:02

George or Alex.

Great names.

Not keen on the others.

Lionbros · 29/01/2024 14:04

I love George, if you love it go for it!

goodgriefsean · 29/01/2024 14:09

I like all your options but Alec, Ewan and Evan would be my top 3. My lovely grandad was an Alec so I'm biased towards it.

ExitRamp · 29/01/2024 14:13

George is a classic name and nicer than your alternatives imo.

I wouldn't let yourself be persuaded against using it by strangers on the internet, especially if you have always loved it.

ddoodle55 · 29/01/2024 14:22

I think all of your options are lovely op.

But if George is the one your heart is set on then don't let popularity put you off, it's a timeless classic and popular for a reason x

KirstenBlest · 29/01/2024 14:52

The names are all ok. It depends on how they sound with the surname.

If the surname starts with a K sound, I'd cross off Alec, Alex and Zachary.
If the surname starts with a N sound, I'd cross off Evan, Ewan and Owen
If the surname starts with a J sound, I'd cross off George.
If the surname starts with a H sound, I'd cross off all apart from George

I'd drop Zachary because off the Zac/Zach/Zak/Zack spellings.

Amalienborg · 29/01/2024 15:16

I think Alex and Zachary/Zack fall into the same category as George. Unremarkable through common use, but still lovely classic names and fine to use if you love them.

Alec, I just find it a bit awkward, my brain wants to say Alex instead.

Evan, Owen, Ewan, all lovely choices.

You may also like Ethan, Aidan, Nathan?

theduchessofspork · 29/01/2024 15:47

Too many Georges, nice though it is

I like Zachary nn Zach a lot

Like Alec too, but only short for Alexander (or Alistair I spose) - lots of Alex/Alexanders about though.

Quite like Owen

Evan’s alright but a bit dated-trendy

Ewan does make me think of sheep..

Gregory maybe?

Mumofgirls2017 · 29/01/2024 16:45

George is a fantastic name. I don’t think popularity matters and it won’t date badly. I like Zachary and Evan from the rest.

tokesqueen · 29/01/2024 16:53

Evan and Zachary I love.
Owen is a bit wet. Ewan just no.
Alec an old man's name.
I like Alexander in its entirety.

CharlieBoo · 29/01/2024 17:04

I know so many George’s, oldest one about 13, huge surge in popularity over the last 10 years. Although a classic I don’t know any in my age group. Like others have said if you love it and have always loved it, then go for it.

I really like Alexander from your list.

BoleynMemories13 · 29/01/2024 20:53

All are nice but George is a handsome classic and is clearly your favourite. Always follow your heart without worrying about what others may or may not be calling their own children. As you say, he will be your George and that's all that matters.
