DD due in a month and Kelly is one we both agree.

Not keen on Kelly but prefer it for a boy. How about Ceri (the Welsh version of Kerry)?

Soccermumamir · 28/01/2024 11:31

Wow my name is Kelly and I am certainly not old or a granny and have taken offence to some of these comments.

turquoisedolphin · 28/01/2024 11:24

It's my name and I've always liked my name!

Mine too. I was named after my aunty.

urrrgh46 · 28/01/2024 11:32

My honest opinion is that there are nicer names from the 70s than Kelly and I don't like the nn Kels either. I much prefer Katie, Carrie, Karla and Katrina but it's absolutely the Ops choice and if she's likes it then go for it!!

Soccermumamir · 28/01/2024 11:35

And we're not all from the wrong side of the tracks at all.

So many lovely famous people called Kelly.

Kelly Brook
Kelly Preston
Kelly Rowland
Kelly Bishop

Than of course Gene Kelly
Lorraine Kelly

Really bad associations. At school in the 90s Kelly smoked wore lots of hair spray and would beat you up if you were square and looked at her funny.

This ⬆️
However, sorry all the much nicer Kellys, I wish I had known you instead.

DuchessOfSausage · 28/01/2024 12:39

It's a nice surname. I think you'd need to use Louise as a middle name for the full late 1970s effect

Roselilly36 · 28/01/2024 13:00

I like Kelly, I also love Kimberley.

Vittoriosa · 28/01/2024 18:01

Anything that rhymes with smelly always a concern

Brexile · 28/01/2024 18:44

It's a school bully name. All the Kellys I've ever known were evil, including the one who was male (old nasty neighbour, American). All of them were loud aggressive bitchy chavs, except the American guy who was quite posh but still had the distinctive Kelly personality. Avoid avoid avoid!

NoKateMoss · 28/01/2024 18:47

Better than Kerry. Not as good as Kirsty.

I'm a Kelly and was born in 1978!! I think it's a lovely name 🤪

JollyJanuary · 28/01/2024 18:52

I like it! And Kerry and Kirsty and Christie. Despite being of the Kelly generation I've only known one and she was lovely.

ReadtheReviews · 28/01/2024 19:29

Boy or girl? Boy 1940s cool. Girl yeah I don't mind a revival. Inoffensive, like Lucy.

IsThePopeCatholic · 28/01/2024 19:40

Awful.

OctaviaRedQueen · 28/01/2024 22:25

I think it’s too dated I’m afraid. If you like Kelly, how about Callie, short for Calliope, Callisto or Camilla?

Holidayhell22 · 28/01/2024 22:32

It’s as good as any other name. I much prefer it to the trend for granny names such as Olive or Nora.
I also like it for a boy.

BananaSplitsss · 28/01/2024 22:35

LollyPopLouie · 27/01/2024 23:19

Keely is nicer.

That’s awful too

Mayjune11 · 28/01/2024 22:37

Ooh no it’s right there with Sharon and Tracey as best left in the 80s! Sorry!

Ceri has always been a male name in my family.

Agree with a PP, seems to be always names of Irish origin that are ‘chavy’ - Liam, Conor, etc. Will be interesting to see what happens to all the Orla’s and Niamh’s!!

onlythebrave3 · 28/01/2024 23:15

I went to University with a Kelly from south Wales. She was a lovely and kind person. It's a pretty name, I'd think how refreshing and pretty a baby Kelly was.

Peccary · 31/01/2024 15:24

I only know nice Kellys ranging in age from 30 to 50. Definitely no school bully types among them.

I think it's fine and not that different in sound from the abundant Ellie/Millie/Molly/Lilys in my 6yo's school

Namechangesab · 31/01/2024 15:45

theduchessofspork · 27/01/2024 22:38

Dear god..

I'm now listening to the Marillion song Kayleigh 😆

OP the multiple Kellys in my class at school were horrible (I'm 39 for context). I do have a close friend called Kelly but she goes by a nickname. Phonetically it doesn't sound too bad but I just can't imagine a baby Kelly

Beebopp · 03/02/2024 05:49

My name is Kelly 😅 I’m 33 and have always loved my name. I don’t think anyone would describe me as a school bully and I do think that there is a lot of snobbery in mumsnet opinions on names.

If Kelly wasn’t my name then I’d have considered it for either of my girls - I love how it sounds and think it would be refreshing at the moment.

Don’t let mumsnet opinions put you off as I do think they are mostly from a certain demographic sometimes.

I've known two Kelly's and neither had any of the attributes, ambitions or accomplishments I'd hope for in a daughter.

Same. I've never known a nice Kelly. They were always hard and nasty.
