Ellie?

Would you think that Ellie could be nn of Evangeline if we introduce her this way from day 1?

If you think about it broken down as Evang - eli - ne .... ? Ellie sound is somewhere there, right?

Or is it too much of a stretch?

A stretch

IAmTheGibby · 27/01/2024 14:31

I’d have thought Evie (EVV-EE) or Geli (JEL-EE) would be more obvious nicknames…

IAmTheGibby · 27/01/2024 14:31

…or even Angie!

aveline161 · 27/01/2024 14:35

It’s Evie if you have to shorten it but why have such a lovely long name and shorten it? Pick the name you want her to be called.

Onelife2024 · 27/01/2024 14:56

I think you can while she’s young, but she might choose a different shortening when she’s older (no bad thing to have options though).

SmallTinSoldier · 27/01/2024 15:07

Ellie has carved a path as a name in its own right. Evangeline is a stretch and there's no need for it if you're going to call her Ellie.

Why exactly do you want to give her the birth certificate name Evangeline but call her Ellie?

If you're torn between the two how about Ellie Middle-Name Evangeline Surname for example Ellie Alice Evangeline Thatcher.

DuchessOfSausage · 27/01/2024 15:12

It's a bit of a stretch.
Ellie has been a name in its own right for decades, and is often short for something like Eleanor, Eliana, Eloise or Elodie.

The natural shortening for Evangeline is Evie.

HowDoTheyGetThroughLife · 27/01/2024 15:14

Call me old-fashioned, but why not just call her Ellie??

I can't understand all this "nick-name" business. I had short, one-syllable names for my kids.

LinoPrintofMotherMary · 27/01/2024 15:26

A stretch. Like loving the name Ellie but lacking confidence to use it.

DuchessOfSausage · 27/01/2024 15:26

I don't either, @HowDoTheyGetThroughLife , unless the 'nickname' is not usually a name in its own right.

On here, it's usually a frilly full name shortened to something extremely popular or not a logical diminutive.
e.g. Christopher shortened to Kit or Toph but not Chris, Penelope shortened to Nell, Polly or Poppy but not Penny

Breadmakers · 27/01/2024 20:07

We have a very valid and important family reason that our daughter will be named “Evangeline”. I can not say more of this because it would be a massive outing.

However, Evangeline, although nice and classic, it’s an incredibly long name which inevitably will get shortened.

We don’t want any of the Evie, Eve, Eva etc. short names as there are millions out there and it’s the inevitable shortening. If we let it develop naturally she will end up with a nice nn, but we don’t want her to be Eva C or Evie B in her class.

It’s like all the Amelias and Olivias , just millions of them around.

Then we don’t agree on Angie And Jelly (honestly is Jelly an appropriate name for a human?! it made me laugh). So they are both a no.

Anyway, the only one that we both like and agree is Ellie which is somehow connected to the name (in a stretch , I appreciate it) and although it is in the Top100, it is not in the Top50 , let alone Top20 names!

bakewellbride · 27/01/2024 20:11

I don't really understand your reasoning- Ellie is a LOT more popular than Amelia and Olivia.

vanillaspice235 · 27/01/2024 20:15

Do you not want to just call her Ellie?

I LOVE the name Ellie :)

vanillaspice235 · 27/01/2024 20:16

Sorry, I've got a habit of replying before I've read the whole thread.

What about Ellie Evangeline?

Cheepcheepcheep · 27/01/2024 20:18

Jella? With a soft J so ‘Yella’?

Zoomerang · 27/01/2024 20:18

Ellie is nice, but an odd shortening and very popular.

How about Lina ( Lee-na) as a nn?

LinoPrintofMotherMary · 27/01/2024 20:19

@Breadmakers I think if that's what you've got your heart set on doing it'll be fine. Bit unexpected but not awful or hugely problematic or anything.

In the England & Wales name rankings Ellie is currently at #78. Evangeline 402nd. Olivia is #1. Amelia is #2 but I think the database may be a year or so behind.

I think it's fine to use Ellie as a nickname as I've known people whose full name is something different than I imagined... Maisie for Madeleine, Millie for Amelia etc. But just to say, Ellie isn't in the top 100 but lots of Ellies are registered as Eleanor, Eliana, Elizabeth or something else, so Ellie might be more common than the naming charts would suggest. Not that that's necessarily a problem, just in case you wanted to avoid a common name!

salamithumbs · 27/01/2024 20:21

Annie could also be a shortening?

salamithumbs · 27/01/2024 20:22

Sorry, meant 'not in the top 50'

GrandDuchessOfBillericay · 27/01/2024 20:22

Ellie only won't be higher because only registered names make the ons. Practically speaking though, on first day primary, Eleanor, Ellie, Ellie-Rose, Ella will all be shortened to Ellie.

I second Lina, Evangeline is imho a lovely name. Don't call her it if you mind it being popular though, as she may pick or organically become Evie later. It's a risk you run.

DuchessOfSausage · 27/01/2024 20:23

Ellie might be at #78 but Ella is at #20, and there will be Ellies who are registered as a longer name. Ellie was #2 in 2003 and 2004.

Breadmakers · 27/01/2024 20:28

Excellent point all re Ellie being a “hidden” popular name due to it being nn to others….

You got me all thinking!

OP posts:
LinoPrintofMotherMary · 27/01/2024 20:30

Yeah very true actually didn't think of that.

Eve, Evie names are also popular atm.

Lena or Lina is an idea. But Luna is super popular and sounds almost identical.

You've got your work cut out!

bakewellbride · 27/01/2024 20:30

Evangeliine is a really odd choice if you hate Eva, Evie etc. Technically that could well end up as the name if you go with evangeline!

What about Eleanor or Eloise? Those are nice names that could have nick name Ellie.
