Sibling name ideas for Rowan

mia91 · 26/01/2024 12:24

I have a little boy called Rowan and would love some ideas for both boy and girl names for baby no.2 please.

I have read a few older threads where people have asked for sibling names for Rowan but I didn't love any.

I like Oliver, Noah and Ted for a boy. We won't use Noah, probably won't use Oliver either (close family member called Olivia) and i'm not super keen on Ollie/Olly. I really love Teddy but DP doesn't (looks like Mumsnet doesn't either!) and Edward or Theodore aren't names we'd use.

I like Molly and Edie for a girl but they're not useable. I also like Thea and Mabel.

I thikn there are less special and beautiful boys names than girls. My first thought was Willow. Raven is also something from same world. Jasper, Thorn.

Thanks everyone!

Lots of lovely names, quite a few discounted only because we have a family/friends child with the name.

I now have some pretty long lists...

Boys:

Austin - what do people think of this?
Oliver
Oscar
Charlie
Albie - DP not sure and doesn't love Albert
Elliot - growing a lot on us
Laurie - really like but not sure on Laurence
Myles
Sebastian
Isaac
Felix

Girls:

Pippa - would probably be our girls name but I can't forget it's meaning in other languages. Phillipa is nice but I want to love the name we put on the birth certificate and I don't love it. Any other options we could shorten to Pippa?
Felicity
Violet
Ada
Ida
Frieda
Ivy
Etta
Margo
Meredith
Lucielle/Lucy/Lucia
Alba
Iris
Mabel
Thea
Willow - love but have seen this picked apart on a few threads!

My neighbour has two girls, Rowan and River, which I think are lovely together

QueSyrahSyrah · 26/01/2024 19:15

Watching with interest OP as your preferred names are very close to mine!

We also have Milo and Elio on our list, and bit of a wildcard but I'm thinking seriously about Matthew or Mattias (the latter being DH's nationality's version of the former).

Aglassaday · 26/01/2024 19:36

@mia91
love Austin!
Laurie I always think looks nice on paper but I grew up with a Laurie and everyone always assumed his name was Lorry like the vehicle😅.

I like Austin a lot, and Rowan and Austin are names that sound good together.

From the rest of your boy list, I like:
Oscar
Elliott
Myles
Isaac
Felix

From your girl list, I like:
Frieda (love this name)
Mabel

I think Thea is a very wispy name.
I don't think you can use a nature name alongside Rowan - too matchy. So though I like Ivy and Willow I wouldn't use them as names for Rowan's sister.

Ida, Ada, Etta, and Margo sound a bit clunky alongside the mellifluous Rowan.

Meredith sounds very harsh to my ear, while Rowan sounds very soft.

Lucy is a bit boring, and juvenile for a grown woman. A bit twee imo.

Suggestions for girls' names:
Cecily (botanical but not obvious)
Sasha
Anna
Lara
Tamsin
Maeve
Cleo
Evelyn
Aphra
Xanthe
Jessamine

Austin - fine
Oliver - like but not keen on Olly
Oscar - ok but not my style

Albie - no
Elliot - ok but Elliot/Elliott/Eliot. Too many El names popular
Laurie - no
Myles - no but Miles is ok
Sebastian - ok but not my style
Isaac - ok but not my style
Felix - ok but not my style

Pippa - prefer Philippa. You could use Pippa
Felicity - nice meaning but long
Violet - ok but not my style. Too naturey with Rowan
Ada - not keen
Ida - not keen
Frieda - not keen
Ivy - not keen and not with Rowan
Etta - not keen. Ate a...
Margo - not keen
Meredith - horrible
Lucielle/Lucy/Lucia - Lucy is nice. Lucia too complicated. Lucielle looks made up
Alba - not keen
Iris - ok but not my style. Too naturey with Rowan
Mabel - frumpy
Thea - don't like
Willow - ok but not my style. Too naturey with Rowan. Would also rule out Holly, Hazel and Heather.
