Hello,

How is the name Ava pronounced in the Uk?

Is A like apple or A like "ey" from hey?

So A-va or Ey-va?

Ey-va (Ay-va)

WithOneLook · 24/01/2024 21:19

Ey-va

MaloneMeadow · 24/01/2024 21:23

Ey-va

Not A-va like avocado!

7catsisnotenough · 24/01/2024 21:27

I'd say Aa-va? As is like Aa-vocado

Ayva is a different pronunciation based on spelling as is Eyva?

popplego · 24/01/2024 21:32

Definitely Ayva

GrannyAchingsShepherdsHut · 24/01/2024 21:34

Ay Va (ay like the name of the letter A)

Unicornpuzzle · 24/01/2024 21:35

Oh gosh, I know anyone in real life and I would never have imagined the "ay"... thankfully I asked here and now I know.

Is Ada following the same trent?

i.e A like Apple of Ay ?

Ey va. Never heard it any other way in the UK.

arlequin · 24/01/2024 21:35

Yes Ay-da for Ada.

Unicornpuzzle · 24/01/2024 21:35

@7catsisnotenough I thought the same... but apparently not!

And sorry a bit irrelevant but are all the Ev names pronounced with E like egg or E like easy?

Acrosstheeuniverese · 24/01/2024 21:37

It's Ay Va.

Mariolu · 24/01/2024 21:38

Ay-va and Ay-da.

I've never heard hard 'a' like avocado Ah-va
I have heard a hard 'a' Ah-da but it was a shortening of a Polish name.

Mariolu · 24/01/2024 21:39

Like easy

Letterbix · 24/01/2024 21:41

I'd pronounce it ey-va, to rhyme with favour

Not A-vuh like 'ave a (banana)

arlequin · 24/01/2024 21:41

Hmm this can vary.

Eva = Eeva

Evelyn = Eevlyn or Evlyn or Evalyn

Evie = Eevie

Evan = Ev-un

HeyDiggity · 24/01/2024 21:43

We call them long and short vowel sounds

/e/ in egg is a short vowel sound /e/ in easy is a long vowel sound.

Ava - the first /a/ is a long vowel sound and the second /a/ is said with a bit more of a schwa which is the ‘uh’ sound or short /u/ sound.

arlequin · 24/01/2024 21:48

Everly = Ever-ly

DappledThings · 24/01/2024 21:49

I would say Ava and Eva the same. But then I met a Polish Eva who says it like Ever.

43ontherocksporfavor · 24/01/2024 21:51

Ayva

Ada is also Ay - sounds like like hey op.

aintnospringchicken · 24/01/2024 21:58

Ey-va

Mumaway · 24/01/2024 21:59

Ay-va. Ee-va is spelt Eva. Although Eva can also be pronounced Ay-va.

They’re definitely not the same - I have an Eva! Ava is ay-va, Eva is ee-va
