Benjamin's nickname

We are calling our DS Benjamin.

We already refer to him as this but obviously its quite a long name. We are unsure of which nickname to use.

Either:

Benji or Benny

He might become Ben when he is older but in our family nicknames tend to stick especially around our family

Jammie?
Better than Benji...

LuluLemony · 23/01/2024 20:39

Just Ben is much nicer than the other two choices.

Geraldneedsasecondclassstamp · 23/01/2024 20:39

Benjen!

MrsTerryPratchett · 23/01/2024 20:42

Benji is a dog's name and Benny is 1970s awfulness.

Ben, Jamie, or in my family it would be BennjiBenBenBenskiBenster. Because we are terrible for lengthening things out of all recognition.

However, when he's here and does something, won't that stick. DD chose her own after one person called her it. She was only 2 at the time.

Toooldtoworry · 23/01/2024 20:42

Ben.

Busted2006 · 23/01/2024 20:47

My family are nickname people and honestly with a name like Benjamin, if we don't initially state the nickname they will start using one for him on day one.

I actually love Jammie, but we call pyjamas Jammies/Jams etc so not sure if it would work

I love Benjamin - a great name! I would have used it myself but didn’t go with our surname. I personally would use Ben right from the beginning as it’s such a lovely nn. As a pp said I’d probably lengthen it to something ridiculous like Benji-wenji-boo-boo behind closed doors but use Ben in public!

CymruChris · 23/01/2024 20:56

You'll probably have to accept that people will naturally shorten it to Ben.

Benji makes me think of Benji Webbe from Skindred which is no bad thing in my opinion 😆

Catscookbook · 23/01/2024 20:59

I like both but prefer Benji. I also know a Benno.

michaelmasdaisies · 23/01/2024 20:59

Ours is Benjamino so far 🤣. Accepting he might be a Ben one day but holding on for now.

zenpig · 23/01/2024 20:59

Benji is lovely (and yes I made the Benji Webbe connection too @CymruChris 😄) but Benny is AWFUL, sorry.

user746016 · 23/01/2024 21:03

Mine is called Benjamin and also

Ben
Benj
Benjo
Benji
Benji Boo
Boo
Boo Shmoo
Shmoo
Shmoobie

etc - names morph and you can't control it

But now that he is 17 mainly Ben or Benj

JanetandRita · 23/01/2024 21:04

Our Benjamin is Ben and he suits it. Someone tried to call him Benji and we shut it down quickly as it sounded like a dog's name. Benjamin is a beautiful name and we love it.

Are you trying to say that you're all too speshul for just Ben? In that case you'll have to go with BennjiBenBenBenskiBenster or similar.

CurtainsUp · 23/01/2024 21:05

Our Benjamin is Ben on a daily basis, but also Benji, Benj and once I called him Benny when he was little. He’s definitely NOT a Benny!!

Love his name as it’s classic, international and therefore not easily misspelt.

I might also have a family nickname for him but it’s not repeatable here!!

Saltnpepperr · 23/01/2024 21:07

Benji - love!

Pocketfullofdogtreats · 23/01/2024 21:09

Top Cat's sidekick was called Benny. I like it! But would prob go for Ben (with Bennidinkum in private) :)

Needmorelego · 23/01/2024 21:11

Benjamin was on my list for possible boys names - and I liked the idea of him being Benji.
Like someone upthread said he would have ended up being Benji Wenji 😂
"Benji" turned out to be a girl. She has a name that can be shortened - and yes I call her a rhymey name.
Team Benji here !

Also, you could use this name Bennidinkum in a terrible version of Mandinka by Sinead O'Connor.

WhoPooedInTheFridge · 23/01/2024 21:13

Are you a Benny tied to a tree?....

PickledScrump · 23/01/2024 21:13

Don’t like benny, I love benji though

hiredandsqueak · 23/01/2024 21:16

My adult son is Ben rather than Benjamin. I call him Benjy although the rest of the family call him Ben. At school and with his friends and work colleagues his nickname is a diminutive of our surname.

Scutterbug · 23/01/2024 21:16

Benji I would go for. I know an adult Benjamin who is just known as Benj rather than Ben or Benji. I don’t like Benny.

quizquiz · 23/01/2024 21:23

My Cousin is called Benjamin, has always been known as Jam! Started as Benjammy, to Jammy, then eventually to Jam Grin He's 29 now and it's still his Family nickname! From your choices I would go with Benny (& the jets.. big EJ fan here!)
