I have a daughter with a Welsh name- I'm Welsh and live in England. we don't know what we're having but if it's a girl we'd like another Welsh name. We both really like Manon but something is niggling me, maybe it's the Man. I do think it's a beautiful name though. Thoughts of Manon or any other suggestions? Thanks!

It is a pretty name but I just associate it with the opera unfortunately - not a very likeable character and a tragic ending.

I like

Seren
Eirlys/Eira
Nia
Mabli
Elen
Bethan/Bethany

I like Manon. Also Tesni, Cerys, Lowri and Nia.

evtheria · 23/01/2024 17:12

Love the name Manon.

Freysimo · 23/01/2024 17:15

I like it. Damien Lewis and his wife the late Helen McRory have a daughter called Manon - and a son called Gulliver!

CornflakesOnTheSolesOfHerShoes · 23/01/2024 17:16

Ooh, I didn’t know Manon was Welsh; I thought it was French, like Manon des Sources. It’s very pretty.

mousey37 · 23/01/2024 17:17

If its good enough for Damien Lewis its good enough for you. Its a lovely name.

Namechangesab · 23/01/2024 17:19

Please do this! I'm never going to have a daughter but if I did she'd be Manon.

If you haven't already watch Manon des Source

ManonDe · 23/01/2024 17:20

[cough cough] well I've always liked it!

Loved Manon De Sources and jean de florette.

CormorantStrikesBack · 23/01/2024 17:21

I really like it. There’s a fairly well known cycling presenter and cyclist called Manon and it’s never made me think of “man’.

Two of my favourite films of all time

I prefer Rhiannon which has a similar ring to it (to me). I think the same as you with the 'Man' beginning, as I think some might assume it's a male name.

Haha my name and my daughter's name is on this list!

Ah I'm glad it's getting positive feedback! Really don't like Rhiannon I know a few unpleasant ones

If I had a girl Manon would have been on the list. I am a bit of Frenchophile though which is how I know the name.

In a similar vein i also liked Maren at the time and Solange.

NachosAndCheese · 23/01/2024 17:36

I thought it was French! I really like it.

Onelife2024 · 23/01/2024 17:37

I like Manon!

My favourite Welsh names are -

Mali
Seren
Carys
Megan
Ffion
Eira

Turniptracker · 23/01/2024 17:42

Sorry I had never heard of it and assumed it was a boy's name

PeterRabbitt · 23/01/2024 17:45

There's a book series with a character called Manon. She's fierce, a leader and I have a hugeeeeee love for the name now.

My baby days are over but I'd 100% use it!

Lochroy · 23/01/2024 17:45

I'm learning all about names today!

I also thought it was French.

It's lovely and I don't see the 'Man'.

Purplecatshopaholic · 23/01/2024 17:49

My Welsh friend has a daughter Manon. Lovely name. Cerys is lovely too.

Grazie234 · 23/01/2024 17:50

I really like it (as a Welsh person living in England). I knew of a couple growing up in the 90s and always thought it was a pretty welsh name compared to some of the harsher ones that were doing the rounds back then.

LydiaTomos · 23/01/2024 17:53

I like Manon. If I had another daughter I'd call her Catrin.

NotDoingOk · 23/01/2024 17:56

I knew a Dutch Manon. She was memorable.

StaunchMomma · 23/01/2024 17:58

It has football connotations, as in 'man on' (when a player is under pressure from an opposing player) and that would put me off, I think.

I take it your DH isn't a footie fan?

ginasevern · 23/01/2024 18:05

I really like it. I always thought it was French, a diminuative of Marie or Marianne.
