We’ve come up with a shortlist of girl names so we can decide what she looks like and what feels right when baby girl’s here. I’ve always loved the name Megan but would your thoughts immediately go to Meghan Markle? Is it a name you would consider?

I’ve always liked Megan too and I don’t think it would be overly popular right now but still a well known name and very pretty. I wouldn’t immediately think Markle either.

Onelife2024 · 22/01/2024 15:15

I love Megan - a gorgeous name! I definitely don’t think of Meghan Markle when I hear it.

yepmeagain · 22/01/2024 15:20

Unfortunately yes. And not in a particularly good way.

pontipinemum · 22/01/2024 15:26

I like it, but only as Meg-ann not Me-gan I think Me-gan is more US though so shouldn't be a problem.

I do think of Megan Markle but not immediately and I am sure that will fade over time. Plenty of names associated with the royals are used all the time

peaceinourtime · 22/01/2024 16:55

Megan’s a nice name. Meghan Markle will fade eventually into obscurity. Besides Megan and Meghan are different spellings.

MaloneMeadow · 22/01/2024 17:43

My thoughts definitely wouldn’t go straight to Meghan Markle but I’m not a fan of it as a name at all really. It was everywhere in the 90s/early 00s and isn’t due a reboot yet. I just feel it’s quite dull & boring, also hate Meg as a nickname

In England it’s normally Meg-un

squeakandbubble · 22/01/2024 17:51

It’s my name, I like it Smile I’ve only ever met 2 other Megan’s in my life too, which I like! Most people do call me Meg, though

HonoriaLucastaDelagardie · 22/01/2024 18:03

I think of Megan as a different name from Meghan. If I see Megan, I think 'pretty Welsh name', not 'Meghan Markle'.

Musomama1 · 22/01/2024 18:13

Years ago, I thought this about the name Kim, would it sound too much like at the time ubiquitous Kim Kardashian? Ten years on and I don't think it would've been a problem. Stars fade. Apart from a name like Madonna...or Kylie.

caringcarer · 22/01/2024 18:46

I immediately thought of Meghan Markle. I don't like the name.

mrsDracoMalfoy · 22/01/2024 21:04

I have a Megan. I love her name. She's an older teen but no one has ever made connection to any famous Megans. Her name is pronounced normally - Meg-an. Hate hates it when people say/spell it differently.

Sundaysunshine21 · 22/01/2024 21:10

I like it. I wouldn’t let Meghan Markle put you off as the name isn’t particularly unusual (I know a few Megans in real life so would think of them before Meghan Markle and most people probably feel the same). I think you only need to worry about famous people if it’s (a) someone really famous and (b) they have a very unusual name, e.g. Beyonce or Britney.

Stressyfab · 22/01/2024 21:11

My mind went to M3GAN.
With no H though I would not associate it with MM

Moier · 22/01/2024 21:19

Definitely.. my second daughters name.
So of course l love it.. she's just turned 31.

Nic4540 · 21/01/2025 16:57

I named my daughter Megan (not Meghan). Megan was my favorite name before Meghan M. came along, and I too have the same issue, thinking people will associate her with Megan M. But I think, do people my generation hate Oko Ono? No, she isn't in our time, just like my daughter Megan's generation won't even know who Meghan M. is, they will only know her by her name, Megan which is beautiful. Meghan probably got Harry bc of her name, she changed it from Rachel to Meghan bc it's pretty. It's very modern, classic and elegant. Just remember our children will grow up in a different generation with different people influencing them, so Meghan M won't be a factor then.

rainythursdayontheavenue · 21/01/2025 17:02

I've got a Megan. She gets called Meg 99.9% of the time, and when she was a toddler she was Meggy-Moo. She's also got a personalised number plate with MEG on it. It's a beautiful name and I can't imagine her being anything else.

Meghan Markle is called Rachel.....

bluebunnys · 21/01/2025 17:37

Unfortunately I too immediately think of Markle. I really don't like the association (or the name - it sounds harsh)

Agree

JustCuttinAboot · 21/01/2025 19:57

I love it, and regret not having used it

Relaxaholic · 21/01/2025 19:58

If you like the name, go for it! But to me it has a bit of a mean girl vibe.

RubyBirdy · 21/01/2025 21:00

I’m in my 30s so know a lot of Megan’s (all lovely, actually), therefore Markle doesn’t even pop into my mind unless I was asked to name a famous Meghan. Even then, I think of Meg Ryan first tbh! I think it’s time for the name to make a comeback!

KayEmAy · 21/01/2025 21:22

I think the name is underrated, it's a lovely name and I've always adored, 'Meg'.

sel2223 · 23/01/2025 06:50

Yes, I immediately thought Markle before opening the thread.

Not in a good way I'm afraid.

Even without that association I don't really like it. I find it very harsh sounding to my ears and a bit 'mean girls'

VenusClapTrap · 23/01/2025 12:21

No, I know other Megans in RL so my association is with them before Markle. Just don’t spell it with an H in there.
