Can't seem to post a link but someone else has done a freedom of information ONS request and ONS now saying 2022 baby name data will be released in March or even April as part of another data release or something. Can anyone link it please. More delays

I think this is it.

It's very frustrating. Have been looking at these lists over the last 6 or 7 years or so. Now I finally have a baby due in June 2024, the 2022 data is massively delayed. Typical!

Also, what on earth is taking so long?

No sorry actually not sure if that is it, there was a new update posted on the ONS website today (as in January 2024)

Can't find it, sorry. I've got to early May in the upcoming releases and not seeing baby names there which doesn't look promising.

The 2021 stats must be so out of date by now.

I checked the 19th and 22nd releases and this was the update. (I think it was just the update that was released not the data).

Latest baby names are available here: Baby names in England and Wales: 2021.
Baby names for babies born in England and Wales will now be included in our Births Characteristics publication. Our next publication due in March/April 2024 will include and additional table of names of babies born in 2022.

Ah, that's hopefully why I missed it in upcoming releases - I was looking for baby names rather than birth characteristics!

When it comes out people will think it's the 2023 data!

BoleynMemories13 · 24/01/2024 06:42

It's ridiculous isn't it? I agree most people will just assume it's the 2023 data when it eventually comes out.

It annoys me how most parenting or naming websites release their own 'stats', which aren't based on actual births and are therefore not at all accurate but they fail to state it's not official data and, in the absence of actual official data, people just assume it is.

There was a quiz question the other day asking for the top 5 boys names in 2023 beginning with J. Well whoever wrote that question clearly didn't do their research properly as there was no "according to" tagline. It was presented as actual data and made me feel unnecessarily cross at their tardiness, but you can see why those sort of things are happening. If someone searches for top baby names in 2023 and that's the first thing which comes up on Google they're going to assume it's true.

I see it a lot on naming forums like here, where parents to be who obviously aren't familiar with official name data and have only looked it up in reference to their own name search start quoting 'stats' which are completely untrue. For example "I see ? fell out of the top 20 last year, which I'm pleased about as it's our top choice but we don't want anything too popular" or "we love ? but I'm wary of choosing it as I see I made the top 100 last year and that's a bit too popular for my liking".

I fear this delay will only get worse over the years with more and more cut backs. It's such a shame that up to date data is no longer readily available and people are relying on information which is either woefully out of date now or from an inaccurate sourse which is wrongly presented as truth to guide their naming decisions.

BoleynMemories13 · 24/01/2024 06:47

Sorry that should say *inaccurate source

Scottyme · 24/01/2024 06:51

I emailed them they said it will be in birth characteristics as a separate listbe out in March

Samzzz · 22/04/2024 14:24

17th May is the date they are working towards.
