Is Scarlett too done now?

Posting for my friend.

My friend is looking for girls names. She really likes Scarlett but is worried it’s now perceived negatively and would like opinions. Also on the list

Lowenna
Xanthe
Ione (Eye-0h-nee)
Elowen
Tabitha

I love Lowenna. I'm not keen on the others, especially Scarlett which I do think is a bit dated now.

EffieGraysDisappointingWeddingNight · 21/01/2024 18:38

I think of Scarlett as being the kind of name upper middle class boho types gave their daughters in the 90s and 00s. I would have thought it had dipped out of fashion but I may be wrong. I quite like it.

Love Tabitha and Elowen too.

EffieGraysDisappointingWeddingNight · 21/01/2024 18:38

Lowenna is cool too.

Not so keen on Xanthe or Ione.

Onelife2024 · 21/01/2024 19:00

Scarlett isn’t one of my favourite names, but it’s fine.

Tabitha is quite nice too (not too keen on Tabby though)

Elowen is lovely but would she become another Ellie?

I’m not keen on Lowenna - not sure how it would be shortened?

Ione - ok - possible spelling / pronunciation issues

Xanthe - ok

LiquoriceAllsorts2 · 21/01/2024 19:57

I like Scarlett, Xanthe and Tabitha (probably Xanthe best)

MillicentTheMagnificent · 21/01/2024 20:00

I really like Xanthe and Tabitha. I don't dislike Scarlett and hardly ever meet any (I've worked mainly in schools - primary and secondary). I think it has a different vibe to your friend's other names though.

Instead of Scarlett who was not a very nice character, why not go for Melanie who was the real heroine.

FayCarew · 21/01/2024 20:03

Scarlett - fine
Lowenna - fine
Xanthe - fine
Ione (Eye-0h-nee) - will get Eye-own
Elowen - nice but will get Ellowyn (its more like Elle-Owen)
Tabitha - fine

I know just what you mean - but also, if I met a baby Scarlett, I wouldn't have any negative thoughts about it. I don't have the headspace for a start 😂 but it's not like it was ever too common, or like it's going to stand out in a bad way. It's like, "OK, baby's called Scarlett, fine" rather than "Why did she call her that?!". It's pretty enough. And never met one, actually.

HuntingoftheSnark · 21/01/2024 20:17

I think Scarlett is lovely. I only know one and she's seven. Not keen on Ione or Xanthe but one of my favourite names ever is Ianthe, a kind of cross between the two.

crew2022 · 21/01/2024 20:27

I love Tabitha

Frankiefarr · 21/01/2024 21:30

I think the problem with Ianthe is people pronounce it Eye-anthe where as the correct Greek pronunciation is EE-anthay

Isn't that true of many Greek names, though, where they are known to us from the Classics rather than from modern Greece? I think your friend is on a hiding to nothing if she's going to expect authentic Greek pronunciations for these sorts of names. Irene's one like that, isn't it - good luck getting three syllables out of it!

Mumofgirls2017 · 21/01/2024 22:19

Much prefer her other list

resm · 21/01/2024 22:51

I think Scarlett is the best name from your friend’s list. I only know one - a really quirky, cool 10 year old so my association with the name is all positive.

NameChangePlease4 · 21/01/2024 23:02

I like all of those apart from Scarlett actually! And I usually only like safe, classic names but these all manage to be very pretty and unusual without being weird. Just lovely!

I don't dislike Scarlett but it's very meh compared to the others.

littlemousebigcheese · 21/01/2024 23:24

Scarlet doesn't seem very in keeping with the rest of that list?! It's trashy and feels dated whereas the others are beautiful

theduchessofspork · 22/01/2024 00:11

I think Scarlett is done

I love Ione
Really like Ianthe (eye-an-thee) more than just Xanthe
Like Lowenna

Elowen - is great - but she'll be another Ellie
Tabitha - I like it.. but it is twee

Ismene (Iz-mee-nee) might be another one

GingerSquid · 25/01/2024 19:15

Scarlett to me is similar to names like, Lola .. were used a lot ten years ago by boho parents and are actually quite hard to pull off!

GingerSquid · 25/01/2024 19:16

Ps Xanthe is a great name!
