It's a family name but I really don't know any small kids named Richard..

I know a 14 year old Richard, none of his friends think it’s particularly odd. It’s in the same vein as William and James in my mind, the old king names. Can’t understand why it’s got such a bad rap tbh. And agree that few people would be aware of the Dick NN. Anyway, you could equally say people shouldn’t use William in case people call him Willy. Hmm

(Richard is my DP’s name, btw).

MarmiteyCrumpets · 21/01/2024 08:05

I love it. It's a beautiful, classic name. Rick or Rich would both make good nicknames.

What about Geoffrey ? Same vintage ?

Also Douglas!

Can't tell you how many men called Doug I have worked with on the phone who all turn out to have be born in the 50s.

I love it. It was on my shortlist. A baby Richard would sound fresh and would be the only one in a sea of Arlos and Teddys.

Agree.

I know a toddler Richard! Maybe an unusual choice these days but once you meet him it's just his name if that makes sense, suits him.

Jk987 · 21/01/2024 18:38

Fantastic name! I've literally never met a bad Richard, they are great guys!

I don't think I'd describe the name Richard as fresh, more dowdy. Reminds me of the colour brown

LittleRobins · 22/01/2024 14:39

I was going to name my baby Richard if it was a boy, it’s sophisticated and easy to spell for a start! But we’re having a girl so back to the drawing board..

peaceinourtime · 22/01/2024 17:02

It’s fine, you can always call him Rocky when he is young as a shortening. Lots of options.

Playdoughcaterpillar · 22/01/2024 17:04

I don't like it but Richie is OK. I know a 12yo Richard. (With a younger sister called Lisa #retro)

Talipesmum · 22/01/2024 17:10

Nice name, I particularly like Rick / Ricky as nicknames. I don’t think it’s especially dated - it’s been in fairly constant use for centuries, and while there was a bit of a peak resulting in quite a lot of dad-aged Richards, I’ve met quite a few 20-35 yr old Richards at work and it’s pretty much classic.

Fifthtimelucky · 22/01/2024 17:34

I think Richard is a great classic name. I don't think it feels dated in the same as some other names people have mentioned.

I think of it as similar to names like William, Edward and Thomas, all of which I also love.

We considered it but discounted it partly because there is already a famous one with our surname, and partly because one it was the name of one my old boyfriends and it might have seemed odd.

Also we didn't have a boy!

Daisybuttercup12345 · 22/01/2024 23:42

Refreshing.

UsualChaos · 22/01/2024 23:47

I know a small Richie, which I like. Not sure about Richard.

CuttingAllTheFlowersStill · 23/01/2024 01:36

I have known some very nice Richards but not very keen on the sound of the name

Fine if you're planning on giving birth to a 50 year old bloke. There are no baby Richards for a reason.

This

Geppili · 23/01/2024 02:40

Nope

Stong. handsome name with interesting history.

Flidina · 23/01/2024 04:31

Richard is my 40 year old sons name, it was a popular name, when he was born, haven't heard of a baby named Richard for a long time, still love the name though, probably due a comeback.

noooooooo · 23/01/2024 05:16

I got put off using what would have been (since the 1960s) seen as a comedic ‘old lady’ name for my DD, it was my granny’s name and I love it. It would have suited her so well!

It was used in a soap as well and people made faces about it. Now no bugger under 45 remembers the character, and that sort of down-the-bingo name is fashionable once more.

Margot is similar. Used to be WI, setting lotion, Margot Leadbetter, now it’s chic, it’s fresh, it’s Margot Robbie. If you like it, use it, references and associations change and what once was a howler becomes charmingly different as PPs have said. Richard is a noble name anyway.

shearwater2 · 23/01/2024 05:41

Richard Armitage - say no more 😍

Great name.

Literallyshakingrn · 23/01/2024 06:33

@shearwater2 great actor and very not heterosexual unfortunately 😕

Guavafish1 · 23/01/2024 06:35

Nice name

Better than the modern names

shearwater2 · 26/01/2024 09:47

@Literallyshakingrn I know. I think I've got over that now, my gaydar was way off for about 15 years there.
