It's a family name but I really don't know any small kids named Richard..

OP posts:

I don't like the sound of it, but I like that it's underused but still recognisable. I've met a couple of teenaged Michelles, Rachels and Sarahs (I work in a school) and always think they're great choices.

I prefer Robert to Richard though and considered it for ds! I like Robbie, Rob and Bobby (for a toddler).

Peter has a similar vibe and is another name I really like

Clingfilm · 20/01/2024 23:03

I know you like the full name but Richie is a nice nn.

Winnipeggy · 20/01/2024 23:04

Each to their own but personally I would explore other options

TheChosenTwo · 20/01/2024 23:05

Well if you really like the name it doesn’t matter what anyone else thinks!
I know a Richard who’s 8, unusual to me just because I don’t know anyone else under about 50 with the name but it’s not offensive or so incredibly unique that no one will know how to pronounce or spell it.
It’s definitely not a name I would have chosen, don’t especially like it but I prefer it to some of the whacky choices!

BoleynMemories13 · 20/01/2024 23:40

It must be popular in Romania. There are 3 at my primary school all from Romania! So it made me smile to see others saying it would feel refreshing to hear it now. When the youngest (age 6) started we were all like blimey not another one! 😂

I really dislike it. It's dull, dated and doesn't shorten nicely (imo) but obviously it's up to you. If it's a family name I'd use it as a middle name.

ZaZathecat · 20/01/2024 23:59

It's a great name and Rich or Richie are nice diminutives

Christmasnutcracker · 21/01/2024 00:32

Fab! Classic and underused. So much better than the overused and dull Oliver that is always listed. Richie is a great nn unlike the awful Ollie. Go for it!

Onelife2024 · 21/01/2024 06:39

It’s a great name with some good nn’s. My only worry (as a mum of tweens / teens) would be that somewhere among the banter among that age group someone would think it funny to use the nn “Dick” and it would stick for the rest of their time at secondary school! Unlikely probably but something to consider.

Jifmicroliquid · 21/01/2024 06:49

Awful name. Though Ritchie wouldn’t be too bad as a nickname. Hate Ricky though.

Overtheatlantic · 21/01/2024 06:54

It’s great as long as you don’t shorten it.

Literallyshakingrn · 21/01/2024 06:55

It's the kind of names that mumsnetters will tell you is the worst name ever and an abomination, and 10 years from now will decide it's incredibly chic. So few Richards are under 55 that it's definitely going to be the case of what goes around comes around.

It's one of the classic male names due a revival. Others are Robert, Gregory and Peter. In 20 years the clubs will be heaving with Milos, Noahs and Jaydens and Richard will stand out as a unique classic in comparison.

Fine if you're planning on giving birth to a 50 year old bloke. There are no baby Richards for a reason.

Well yes, that’s it’s been out of fashion, but mid century names are coming back so it surely will. A bloke of 50 would be young to be a Richard, although it was still being used a bit in the 70s.

I like it OP, though I prefer Robert.

DustyLee123 · 21/01/2024 06:59

No. You know what he’s going to get called.

MinnieMountain · 21/01/2024 07:00

It’s a good name. We didn’t consider it as DH’s oldest friend is Richard (they’re 44 btw) but I wouldn’t have said no otherwise.

kids wouldn’t know the nn though. And nothing in the name actually sounds like that.

No. You know what he’s going to get called.

He isn’t though.

No kid would have heard of that. And no middle aged Richard is called Dick - it’s an old shortening

Of course they’ve heard of it. I work in schools and I’ve heard it used.

MynameisRichard · 21/01/2024 07:23

Obviously name changed for this.
I've always been amused that names I regard as 'old git' names (Arthur, Freddie, etc. which were names of my parent's generation) have come back into fashion, so no reason why Richard shouldn't come back into fashion either.
I'm called Richard by everyone I know. Very very few people have ever tried to refer to me as Dick. Those who have, I innocently ask if they don't mind me calling them 'Twat' (or worse), and then they don't tend to try again.
Great name (even if I may be biased 😁). Easy to spell, easy to pronounce and unpretentious.

CormorantStrikesBack · 21/01/2024 07:37

I think there are similar , nicer classic names such as Samuel, Matthew, Benjamin

MrsJellybee · 21/01/2024 07:49

Love it as it's my father's name. He is 72.

I think I taught one Richard in my whole teaching career. He'd be about 34 now.

It's a lovely, classic name and a break from the Noahs/Olivers/Archies

bobomomo · 21/01/2024 07:51

I know a two year old, they call home Richie as a nn

BellaTheDarkOverlord · 21/01/2024 07:52

Dh is a Richard. NN Rick, Ricky, Rickstick, Rickardo the reindeer. Sometimes dickhead.

Use it!

catelynjane · 21/01/2024 07:53

I just think it's a bit dull and I don't really like Richie or Ricky as nicknames either.

Neurodiversitydoctor · 21/01/2024 08:00

DFIL was Richard b1946 , RIP. I knew a few of my age (48). The lead charecter in it's a sin (born 1962) was Ritchie.

Neurodiversitydoctor · 21/01/2024 08:01

What about Geoffrey ? Same vintage ?
