Anyone remember the film My girl, main character named Vader (Maybe spelt different)
I really like the name and thinking star wars isn't as popular as it was my partner is unsure

Darth Vader…

Do you mean something else? Veda, perhaps? I think that’s a name

PuttingDownRoots · 17/01/2024 20:02

Its Vada apparently. Means knowledgeable.
Vader means father.

ShinyPikachu · 17/01/2024 20:04

It's Vada in My Girl.

Star Wars is still massively popular. Just go see the spin off shows on Disney+. Ok they aren't about Vader but the word is still hugely associated with the character.

TinyYellow · 17/01/2024 20:07

I’ve never watched a Star Wars film in my life and I still jumped straight to thinking Darth Vader.

Shame because it would be pretty otherwise.

TeabySea · 17/01/2024 20:09

To me, Vader ("vay-der") = Star wars / Vada ("vah- der") = polari for 'look'.

Ormside · 17/01/2024 20:10

Hope she isn't born on 04/05...

NuffSaidSam · 17/01/2024 20:10

Darth Vader, sorry.

My DC who have never seen Star Wars no about Darth Vader. He's very much still 'out there' as a character.

I do love names with a D sound in them though and there aren't loads. How about:

Cariad
Ida
Matilda
Astrid
Madeline
Ada
Jada
Elodie

Purtyburty · 17/01/2024 20:11

I love the name Vada because of My Girl and always wanted to use it but couldn't get past the Darth Vader reference. I prefer the spelling Veda, and will consider it as a middle name.

InTheRainOnATrain · 17/01/2024 20:14

I have a 6YO in Y2 and she’s been invited to 2 Star Wars themed parties this term… at one they had someone dressed up as Darth Vader, at the other he was just in the party bags in squishy form. Of course it’s still a thing! No one will think of anything else when they hear it.

BarelyLiterate · 17/01/2024 20:14

Great idea. How about ‘Anakin’ as a middle name? What a lucky little girl Vader Anakin would be! 🙄

Heather37231 · 17/01/2024 20:15

What about Vida?

WingBingo · 17/01/2024 20:17

I knew a Vida, beautiful name.

Thegirlhasnamechanged · 17/01/2024 20:20

DS has a girl in his nursery class called Vada (pronounced like Darth) and Star Wars is 100% what my brain goes to each time I hear it.

moderationincludingmoderation · 17/01/2024 20:22

It is spelt Vada - I know a Vada!

ImaginaryLobster · 17/01/2024 20:23

it's such a shame its linked so hard to Darth Vader so think it would be unfair to use

OP posts:
Frederica145 · 17/01/2024 20:26

Sorry, but no, please don't. Vader = Darth Vader and will do for a very long time.
Why not -
Vera
Vivian
Valerie
Vida
Vala
Verity

GothConversionTherapy · 17/01/2024 20:27

Well her name wasn't Vader, so there's that.

I like Vida, it's used in Serbia not sure if it has associations with other countries.

Thehamsterthatcametotea · 17/01/2024 20:29

I love Star Wars but immediately thought My girl rather than Star Wars. Do it!

Blueberry911 · 17/01/2024 20:41

I love the name Vada but there is always that instant Star Wars connection :(

Filamumof9 · 17/01/2024 20:54

In Dutch it means Father, so would more likely be a masculine name instead of feminine.

fairiesrus · 17/01/2024 21:10

😂😂🤣 best comment! But maybe the force would have to be with her having a name like that!

MooseBreath · 17/01/2024 21:49

With a rhotic accent, Vada is pronounced entirely differently to Vader. If your accent would read Vada as "Vader", I would not use it.

MaloneMeadow · 17/01/2024 22:12

Absolutely awful, why would you do that to a child. I’m not even a Star Wars fan, I’ve never watched it in my life and still my first thought was Darth Vader

SemperIdem · 17/01/2024 22:15

Filamumof9 · 17/01/2024 20:54

In Dutch it means Father, so would more likely be a masculine name instead of feminine.

It has annoyed me for years that in Pitch Perfect Anna Kendrick’s character states that Vader is German for father! Such lazy writing!

GoodVibesHere · 17/01/2024 22:27

Get a grip woman, you can't call the poor girl Vader.
