Help! Baby name poll

Hi everyone, my baby boy is due to arrive next week and we’re struggling to decide on a name.

We currently like Oliver (Ollie), William (Will) and Edward (Eddie) but none seem to be standing out.

Lots of other names we like have already been used by family and friends.

I’ve set up a poll (hope it works!)… Please can everyone tell me their favourite? For info, his sibling is Thomas.

I love Thomas. All three names are nice but I think Teddy is too popular currently. Just Edward or Ed/Eddie is fine.
William was very popular after the current POW was born so I know a lot of 30-something Wills. I like Billy.
Oliver is fine.
I'd probably pick James or Oliver.

I don't recommend James as a middle name - too overused.

Thank you :) I think that’s the problem… we really loved the name Thomas!

My niece has just had a baby boy named Teddy, so it would definitely be Edward (Eddie).

How about Philip or Michael?

Onelife2024 · 15/01/2024 20:52

Thomas is one of my favourite names (I couldn’t use it for my ds as a cousin used it first).
All your 3 options are lovely - I voted Edward because it has been consistently popular without being over-used in any particular decade. There so many Olly’s in my children’s classes that they are all known by their surnames! And Will is great but as pp said it peaked a few decades ago. All are lovely though, you can’t go wrong!

resm · 15/01/2024 20:53

I love Oliver, but not keen on Ollie even though I voted for this option. I just prefer the long form. Will is a very close second!

I also have a Thomas with brothers Isaac and Jude.

FayCarew · 15/01/2024 20:55

I'm not keen on Ollie either but it's miles better than Teddy.
I suspect OP has a preference for Edward.

Notlongtogo2 · 15/01/2024 21:16

The popularity of the name Oliver is the only thing that slightly puts me off. We already know of 3 (1 Oliver, 2 Ollie’s), but not children of close friends. If we picked it we’d call the baby Oliver. I put our favourite nicknames in brackets as we can’t use Teddy, or Billy - which I do like!

James, Philip and Michael are already names in the family. But I’m not sure at this point if I could convince my husband to choose anything other than the 3 names I’ve suggested!

They are all nice and v popular - I prefer William and Edward,

I’d go for William because it seems less used right now (I know a ton of teen / 20s Wills, but not many little ones)

SkaneTos · 15/01/2024 22:09

I voted for Edward (Eddie), but they are great names, all three of them.

Beautifulsunflowers · 15/01/2024 22:17

I vote Oliver - sorry can’t seem to see the poll - maybe because I’m not using the app? Anyway, don’t let the popularity of Oliver put you off - it’s a lovely name for a reason! I think it goes beautifully with Thomas too!

FWIW - I have an Oliver - Olly to his mates, age 22. It’s only in the last couple of years he’s made a friend with the same name! In 2 primary schools, secondary school and various after school clubs he was always the only one in his year group.

Oliver Edward Surname I think is really nice. Good luck deciding and good with the birth.

Thank you Beautifulsunflowers :)

Edward gets my vote. The other two are quite popular especially Oliver.
My suggestions that go with Thomas are Daniel or Matthew.

CharlieBoo · 16/01/2024 17:23

I personally think James is lovely with Thomas. I voted William as I love this name. Edward is also lovely. Oliver is ok, I just don’t like Ollie and I think it’s pretty inevitable that will be the shortening. Good luck

FayCarew · 16/01/2024 17:26

Samuel?

Chaiandtoast · 16/01/2024 17:35

Oliver William sounds nice.

What about Theo?

KayEmAy · 16/01/2024 19:52

I like Oliver and William equally I just feel like in the last 5 years every other boy born was named Oliver so I voted for Will. :)
