Same Name

We found out we're having a baby boy and our favourite name is the same name as our next door neighbours 5 year old son. It's relatively uncommon but not unique. And we're friendly but not close friends (as in we do a meet up at Christmas and talk regularly / go for drinks once or twice a year).

What's the views on using it? Is it acceptable?

Completely acceptable.

mamacorn1 · 11/01/2024 18:10

I wouldn’t, but it’s your choice .

Singingasong · 11/01/2024 18:11

I would pick another name.

Talipesmum · 11/01/2024 18:12

Totally fine.

Winnipeggy · 11/01/2024 18:15

Are you worried what they will think? Maybe ask them how they would feel about it?

Yepidid · 11/01/2024 18:16

You or they could move.
I have naibours both sides with a child with the same. They moved in with their children already named. We also have the male and female version of a common name in the street next to each other . It's fine..
Use a name you love

turtlessquirtles · 11/01/2024 19:08

Perfectly acceptable but obvious you've copied them. Go for it they won't be your neighbours forever.

Jasmine43 · 11/01/2024 19:11

Just think long term, are you likely to still be living next door and meeting up with them in 5-10 years time? If not then I’d say go ahead. We always had our little girl’s name picked then moved house and the next door neighbour’s regularly watched their granddaughter called the same name. We still went ahead and used it and moved house 2 years later so it makes no difference now

tokesqueen · 11/01/2024 19:14

Your favourite?
Of course you use it.

BirthdayRainbow · 11/01/2024 19:17

Use it. I thought I had to change my chosen name for my baby when someone in the group had used the same name first. Luckily h said no, I haven't seen her in years and it suits my son perfectly.

Alwaystired2023 · 11/01/2024 19:23

I think it's so fine, wouldn't care if my close friend picked the same names as my DC it literally does not matter in the grand scheme of things

I guess you could say 'great news we are expecting little strange but we were always going to call our first born Jimbob' your not asking permission but am sure they will say ah that's lovely not many Jimbobs around and if they don't then you can't help mad people

cheeseplease3 · 11/01/2024 19:31

Really appreciate the thoughts! I'm so tempted but definitely think I would mention it. Not a permission request but a to let you know type thing. It really is our favourite and the only one we agree on at the moment!

I had a baby at the same time as a colleague who became a good friend. My DD has the same name as her eldest. I did consider if it was an issue, but none of us thought it was. We have a Big and a Mini.

LilyLemonade · 11/01/2024 19:36

Totally fine. I’d be more circumspect if they were family but with friends who are not in your closest circle, no issue.

theduchessofspork · 11/01/2024 20:22

Yes fine

Onelife2024 · 11/01/2024 21:06

I wouldn’t mind if my neighbours chose the same name as one of my children - shows how much you like their name choice! I’d probably mention it to them first though, I’m sure they’ll be fine with it
