Alice or Rose

Hi everyone,

I posted a while ago asking for name advice. Our baby girl is now nearly 3 weeks old and is still unnamed!

We love traditional names and our choice is now between Alice or Rose.

We have a William and an Ella and our surname is 3 syllables and starts with R.

Alice - is the definitely the favourite. Only worry is how it sits with her sibling names. Unintentionally all the names have a strong /l/ sound. Worried that especially Ella / Alice are too similar in sound. This is literally the only reason why Alice has not been chosen. Don’t want to regret it in the further when the girls are bigger and I’m using both names together regularly ‘Ella, Alice!’ Will it sound silly?

Rose - have had it on our list since our first child. Would really want her to be Rose not Rosie. I know Rose as middle name and hyphened name is now very popular which is a shame. Also find it a harder sounding name to use with a little one but do really like it as a name as she grows.

Any advice / opinions would again be greatly appreciated. How much of this is us giving the needed thought and how much is totally overthinking it!!

Thank you!

I think you’re right about Ella and Alice sounding similar. I suspect you’re feeling conflicted because this means choosing Rose by default, not because it’s your favourite.
I don’t think the ‘l’ sound is a problem; if Rosalie were the preferred alternative, it wouldn’t sound wrong.

I'd go with your first choice, Alice. Don't think it sounds silly with Ella at all. Similar but not silly :)

toastofthetown · 11/01/2024 12:42

I don’t think Ella and Alice work nicely as sisters’ names. I’ve heard worse, but I wouldn’t use them together. I would consider how much you dislike Rosie though. It won’t be your name, and she might end up preferring Rosie to Rose when she’s old enough to have an opinion.

DuploTrain · 11/01/2024 12:42

Yes I think Alice and Ella are too similar, I’ve just tried to say them together and ended up saying Ellis to myself.

I have always loved Rose as a first name though. It’s strong and elegant but feminine all at the same time. I’m very partial to a one syllable name.

PossumintheHouse · 11/01/2024 12:43

I don’t see the issue with Alice and Ella at all. I also think Rose R* might not be the best fit, although that entirely depends on your full second name.
I’m biased towards Alice as it’s on my top 5 list, though.

OwlWeiwei · 11/01/2024 12:46

Luh and Liss are fairly different sounds which are the end sounds of the two names ella and Alice for most UK speakers, so I think it's fine.

I think the three names flow nicely together, and possibly better than an R/R name like Rose Robertson.

OopsieeDaisy · 11/01/2024 13:01

Alice is lovely and goes fine with your other childrens’ names, nothing wrong with Ella and Alice to me! Agree with pps about an R/R name possibly not being the best, unless you like the alliteration.

Theoldwoman · 11/01/2024 13:35

Alice is my favourite name right now!

I have an Ella, so I love that. William is also one of my favourite boys names.

Rose is great, but I’m not a fan of alliteration at all.

Im not much help, but if it were me I would pick Alice!

Onelife2024 · 11/01/2024 14:04

Alice is my favourite name and my teenage dd called Alice agrees!

Onelife2024 · 11/01/2024 14:19

Ps I think Alice sounds lovely with William and Ella

KirstenBlest · 11/01/2024 14:19

Alice. Rose does go better with Ella but they are two individuals.
Rose doesn't go too well with an R surname IMO, and you will find that some people will call her Rosie.

NotFastButFurious · 11/01/2024 14:55

ooh I love Alice but William, Ella and Alice is quite a mouthful, too many l's!

Honeybeebuzz · 11/01/2024 20:13

You seem to prefer Alice, i dont think its too similar to Ella. I wouldn't go with a name you dont love just because it goes better with other names.
I loved both these names however we ended up going with Lucy with if you want an alternative

Pammela2 · 11/01/2024 20:16

I would go for Alice! I also have an Ella, and a Lily! So in the ‘l’ camp, and I think they go well! Alice is my fave name if we have another!

theduchessofspork · 11/01/2024 20:19

They are both nice

But Rose is really lovely - you can’t stop nn so just stick to Rose as much as you can

Alice is nice too but I do think it’s too close to Ella for siblings

orangetriangle · 11/01/2024 20:25

I love Rose classic name

CharlieBoo · 11/01/2024 20:42

I personally think Rose goes better with your other childrens names, although I prefer Alice slightly.

Alice and Ella are just a different vibe to me.. Ella and Rose go better.

RuthW · 11/01/2024 20:43

I think Alice goes better

Snugglemonkey · 11/01/2024 20:56

Go with Alice. It is your preference and names are used as a sibling set for such a short time really. You are naming two individual women really, their names do not need to match.

Lifeinlists · 11/01/2024 21:02

Alice. You like it better and it's fine with Ella.

WishesPromises · 11/01/2024 21:04

Alice is beautiful as is Rose.

Rose less common as a first name.

ALunchbox · 11/01/2024 21:14

I prefer Alice, which i think goes well with Ella.

Vexxa · 11/01/2024 21:24

I think Alice and Ella work fine together. I say this as someone who decided against Alice as a first name for DD2 on the basis that it rhymes with DD1's name - we used Alice as a middle name instead. It's a gorgeous classic name and it seems to be the one your heart wants.

PickledScrump · 11/01/2024 22:06

Alice is beautiful. They will only be said together for a short time in the grand scheme of things, once they’re adults and have their own lives you won’t say them together as much. Go with your favourite, otherwise you’ll probably regret it.

BoleynMemories13 · 12/01/2024 20:10

I prefer Alice and think it sounds absolutely fine with the sibset. You should definitely go for your favourite.
