Which Greek names will be the next big thing?

We don't have any on our list so far, except for Chloe which is quite mainstream, but it seems like they are very trendy now and I just thought about this today and was wondering which one you think will become popular next.

Right now Penelope is really popular as well as Athena. I think Daphne, Apollo, Atlas are all rising quickly. Zoe, Chloe and Phoebe were popular in the past.

Which one of these has a chance and have you noticed any? I'm just so curious:

Antigone - I heard this is rising quickly among posh people, can anyone confirm?

Chione

Persephone - Saw this a few times, too.

Calliope

Nephele

Nike

Atlas

Apollo

Ares - I've seen this a few times too.

Eurydice

Any ideas?

It's just out of curiosity, because I'm intrigued. The only one on our list so far is Chloe, but I'm thinking about adding Phoebe again. I guess we're not brave enough for Persephone, even though I like it.

Calista? Is that Greek?

cheapskatemum · 09/01/2024 13:31

I must ask her which pronunciation she prefers. Thanks for pointing that out @FallingStar21

ApolloandDaphne · 09/01/2024 16:23

I love Apollo. Also Daphne.

As a Greek woman with an English partner, I must say I'm quite thrilled about the idea of using a traditional British name like for DC. DH finds this humorous and his sisters are always asking if we'll go for a "lovely Greek name" instead. It's quite amusing to me, you know, because I actually feel the opposite way about English names. I think we all have a tendency to hold other cultures in higher regard, thinking that they're more elegant or exotic or whatnot. We're all guilty of it, really. Many young people in the Anglosphere nowadays seem to prefer made-up, modern names when there are so many beautiful classics available. Sometimes we don't realise what we have until it's gone.

There's a Calliope in my son's class, but her parents had clearly only seen it written down. They pronounce it Callie-ope (as in hope). I inwardly wince every time I hear anybody say it!

Twelve8Ts · 09/01/2024 21:12

I wanted to call my daughter (3) Xanthe but absolutely nobody liked it and I was gutted because I think it’s beautiful!

noooooooo · 09/01/2024 21:15

Andromache

SkaneTos · 09/01/2024 21:19

I know two girls born around 2010 who are called Nike. Neither of them have Greek heritage.

PrawnDumplings · 09/01/2024 21:19

I love:

Nefeli
Xanthe
Xenia

HalfBloodPrincess · 09/01/2024 21:20

DP wanted to call 6yo DS Leonidas. We compromised on Leonard

PrawnDumplings · 09/01/2024 21:20

Ophelia is beautiful too.

HelenaJustina · 09/01/2024 21:21

I know an Elektra, Penelope and a Calliope.

BeyondMyWits · 09/01/2024 21:28

I know an Andromeda nn Andi and a Cassiopeia nn Cassie. Not related to each other - though daughter and mother in mythology.

Unexpectedlysinglemum · 09/01/2024 21:32

I love Persephone after watching naughts and crosses - sephy for short!

Oh no! That's so upsetting! 🤦🏻‍♀️

Greeks don’t really use names like Xanthe or Xenia for their dcs now. Unless naming after grandparents, which is traditional.

They are older names - most I know are 50+.

My name is vile so I hope I never see it on a list of names though still quite popular in Cyprus and Greece but only because of naming after grandparents!

Memba · 09/01/2024 21:43

I've always liked Thisbe but wasn't brave enough to use it!

LaMariposa · 09/01/2024 21:50

Hypatia was number one of my list but DH vetoed it. I’m still sad.

NanaRant · 09/01/2024 21:53

This is making me smile. My daughter Artemis is nearly 30, and my little Granddaughter is Hera. (My daughter loves her name, always has and was adamant that it was never shortened)

MojoJojo71 · 09/01/2024 21:54

I love Antigone nn Tiggy but wasn’t brave enough to use it. I’ve been a midwife/sonographer for 20 years now and I’ve never come across one in real life. Mind you, I probably don’t work in a posh enough postcode 😊

PurpleBrocadePeacock · 09/01/2024 21:55

I know quite a few Lyra and Irises.

Theo, for a boy, quite ubiquitous.

Ari names - Ariadne, Ares, Aria, Ariana - I think collectively seem popular but I only know one of each.

I only know one Tiggy short for Antigone.

Terrribletwos · 09/01/2024 21:56

I think Elena is nice.

It's a great name, one of my pet pigs is called Hypatia.

Thebookdragon · 09/01/2024 22:00

I know plenty Hera, Hero, Helen, Penelope, Artemis, Atlas, Ophelia, the children in my son’s class don’t bat an eyelid. I think Athena was avoided to the poster place but now it doesn’t exist it might make a come back … might have to wait a while for Zeus, Poseidon, Gaia and Hades though 👍

bringon2024 · 09/01/2024 22:02
