Baby names

One week to go and still nowhere near a name for baby girl #3!

Expecting my third girl. Here are some names I like but can’t/won’t use, maybe I’m being too fussy. DH is to blame for a lot of these as you will see but he is being stubborn and annoying 😬 he has a particular thing about random name connotations which I don’t think we need to worry about. I have a thing about shortenings - I know many names get shortened in the UK so I want to ensure we pick a name where we also like the most obvious shortenings.

Florence/Freya - we both really like both of these names. My reservations are that they are too popular (top 10) And in the case of Florence I’m not overly keen on Florrie or Flossie.

Matilda - DH loves this but I’m worried about shortenings. I like Tilda but really strongly dislike Tilly (or Mattie)

Iris - we both like this but doesn’t feel quite right, not sure why.

Ottilie - again maybe a bit faddy/overly popular. I like Ottie but am worried about a Tilly shortening.

Violet - love but DD2s middle name so feel like we can’t use it

Odette - love this so much and would pick immediately but have very good friends with DD also called Odette who is same age as our eldest.

Margot - initially vetoed by DH who said everyone will think of Margot Robbie (?). I’ve also become concerned about similarity to Maggot and mispronunciations of Mar-GOT.

Frida/Fritha - love the scandi vibe but it doesn’t feel quite right and we can’t settle on a spelling or pronunciation and DH thinks it would be too odd.

Some names I like but DH has vetoed for being too “weird” (he’s more conservative than me in his choices whereas I would prefer not to have a super popular name):
Rowan
Vita
Zuri
winter
Poet
Seren
luna
Marigold

Names DH has vetoed for having random connotations that he doesn’t like:
Pippa
Clara - this is a fave of mine so I’m very sad. He says it’s too close to Claire which is a family name.
Alice

PLEASE HELP!

I would get the latest top 100 girls names and look at the bottom 20. Any there you like?

Go with violet it doesn't matter at all about the middle name.

I know a Matilda who never gets Tilly so it is doable.
She prefers Tilda as a shortening and is now old enough to correct people herself if they ever do, which is rare.

Imogen?

Choose Freya (doesn't matter about popularity) or Odette (doesn't matter about your friend's child).

Florence/Freya - Freya is nicer than Florence and less popular (round my way at least)

Matilda - You could easily encourage Tilda as a nickname until your DD is old enough to choose for herself.

Iris - a meh name

Ottilie - really don’t like this

Violet - I wouldn’t use it if it’s your other DD’s middle name

Odette - don’t like

Margot - very popular and not that nice

Frida/Fritha - meh

Rowan - boy’s name to me
Vita - not great
Zuri - nope
winter - faddy
Poet - not a name
Seren - meh
luna - lovely
Marigold - makes me think of the gloves

Pippa - nice enough
Clara - adding the L ruins this name. Cara is beautiful, Clara is clunky and ugly to me.
Alice - ok but a bit meh

Florence/Freya - Freya has been overused and has become meh. Frey isn't very nice Florence could be Flo
Frida/Fritha - both nice and not oveused
Suggestion: Flora, Felicity

Matilda - Tilda makes me think of rice.
Ottilie - I don't like it or Ottie
Suggestion: Jemima, Tabitha, Tamara

Iris - seems a bit nothingy but it's nice
Violet - it's ok
Suggestion: another flower or nature name

Odette - you love it. The other Odette might move away or you might move
Margot - too popular right now. Maggot
Suggesion: Margaret/ta. nn Maggie, Rita or Greta

Rowan - ok but a bit too unisex
Vita - ok short for Victoria
Zuri - not familiar with it
winter - too gloomy
Poet - dreadful
Seren - not keen
luna - too trendy. Dog or cat's name
Marigold - washing up gloves

Pippa - ok Suggestion: Polly
Clara - gets said as Clah-ra nowadays not Clair-a Suggstion: Sara or Cara
Alice - love it

What about Odile (the black swan to Odette's white swan)?
Olive really wouldn't be shortened to Livvy unless she forced it.
Freya is absolutely lovely.

Other ideas:
Cora
Zara
Thora
Thea
Delphine
Genevieve
Jasmine
Sylvia
Coralie

From your list I like Alice, Iris, Rowan (love this for a girl) and Clara

My suggestions would be:-

Ramona
Rosa
Tabitha
Isolde
Anya
Eliana
Topaz (I know, but I looooove it!)
Caroline - I know SO many children and not a single Caroline. I think it’s so pretty)

Congratulations!

Is Bronwyn one of your other DD's names? If not, you could go with the traditional spelling of Bronwen or go with Branwen.

Seren is lovely and would be on my list.

How about:
Cliona or Clarissa instead of Clara?
Floella instead of Florence?
Melissa instead of Matilda
Viola instead of Violet?

DuchessOfSausage · 08/01/2024 13:33

Bronwyn - please don't. As another pp, use the Bronwen spelling or use Branwen.
The -wyn ending is masculine

I’m not sure you need to worry so much about shortenings - my kid always goes by a shortening of his name which is not the most obvious one. Eg Benjamin but he’s Jam not Ben (not the actual name but same premise!). No one even thinks of him as a Ben or tried to call him that or anything. No confusion at all.

I vote Matilda aka Tilda as I love both and don’t know many young Matildas actually. Agree that Tilly is bad.

I really like Freya and Winter from your list. I do like Florence too and think the shortenings are quite sweet.

Agree it's a no to Tilly, every other female dog is called that in my local park.

Keep us updated on what you decide x

I know a Florence known as ren so doesn't have to be flo, floss or flossie

Kara - similar to Clara, but nothing like Claire and gets the Scandi vibe in.

Or how about:

Rosalind
Tabitha

I just gave birth to my third babygirl, and she did have a name but I instantly said she doesn't look like that name and my partner agreed so she's had no name since birth, I never struggled with my other 2 daughters my eldest is called
Skyla-Gray (skyla wasn't that popular 10 years ago)
And my middle daughter is called Millie (dad picked it)

New baby girl was meant to be called Isabelle but I think the syllable difference irritated me too 🤣 but finally after 3 weeks I looked at her and a name popped up that wasn't even on my list of names and it suits her, weve been trying it for a few days and it feels right so her name is now Frankie.

Best advice would be to have a little list and write her full name (first, middle and last) all together and see how they look and feel when saying them, if you both can't agree on it take it off the list.
But be prepared to give birth and possibly decide no names you picked suit her and change it completely like we did 😅

I find picking baby names one of the hardest things to do, it's our responsibility to give them their name for life but there is so much pressure that comes with it. It caused me way to much anxiety 🤣 xxx

I think Clara Odette would be a beautiful name

Cora
Phoebe
Georgina/Georgia

I've come across a little girl called Lorelei, which is unusual but sweet and a similar feel to some on your list.
