Hi everyone, we are looking for some ideas/advice! We don’t know what we are having (due next month) and in the last 2 years I know loads of girls that have been born and less than 5 boys. We have settled on a boys name (after both of my grandfathers) - James/Jamie.
We are really stuck for a girls name as we feel every name we like has been taken. We were settled on one of these and within the last three months a work colleague, neighbour or friend has taken them: Emelia, Emily, Ella. We have a one syllable surname and the second name would be Rose after my mother & grandmother, so would ideally like a two syllable first name. These are the names that are ‘taken’ in the last couple of years: Mia
Fiadh
Ella
Eve/Eva
Rose/Rosa (cousin took Rose in Sept)
Emelia
Ayda
Mara
Erin
Ava
Cara/Kara
Clara
Grace
Katie
Naoise
Evelyn
Layla
Alana
Abi
Millie
Willow
Daisy
Isla
Ciara
Eloise
Saoirse
Aoibhinn
Orlaith
Sophie/Sofia
Robyn

Ellen
Shona
Lucy/ Lucia
Emma
Cora
Nancy
Isabel
Lily
Indie
Darcy
Holly
Maeve
Niamh
Clodagh
Leah
Pia
Olivia
Cliodhna/Cliona
Zara

Please help as we are all out of ideas!

I know! Feeling a tad unlucky and dumbfounded. Especially when we had agreed on names and then the names were taken in the last 2-3months! Really appreciate all your suggestions!

Rose as a middle name - every other little girl will have Rose, May or Grace as a middle name so I would pick a first name that is not very popular, especially if the surname is something like Smith or Jones.
Rosa as a first name is nice.

If you are using Rose as a middle name, don't use a flower/nature/adjective first name. (Scarlett Rose, Daisy Rose, Willow Rose etc)

Mia, Fiadh, Leah, Pia, /Sofia - samey
Ella, Eve/Eva, Ava, Niamh, Evelyn - overused and samey
Rose/Rosa (cousin took Rose in Sept) - I'd say use Rosa
Emelia - Emelia is truly awful. Looks like you couldn't decide between Amelia or Emilia so went for a mishmash.
Ayda - ugly. Ada is ok
Mara, Cara/Kara, Zara, Clara - samey
etc

You have a lot of Irish names on there and a lot of names that have been popular for a long time.

I'd ignore what names you can't use and look for a name you like. If you like Holly you might like Molly or Polly.

What about Dorothy, Jessica, Jemima or Tamsin?

I think you can still use Emilia, Emily or Ella if you love those names. They are commonly used generally, so I wouldn't be put off by someone (especially a work colleague or neighbour) using them. You could easily choose something else you don't live as much and then still find that someone else uses it.

Agree with the pp who said that every other girl will have Rose as a middle name (along with Grace and May), it’s become the absolute filler middle name. The equivalent of Louise or Jane.

So give her a not as common first name as every Eva/Poppy/Isla/Ella/Emily/Lily/Mia will have Rose as a middle name. She will just be another ‘something’ Rose. Or use two middle names to break it up.

AnneKipankitoo · 07/01/2024 20:48

Mary

JMPB · 07/01/2024 20:49

I agree with a PP, if you like Jamie use it for a boy or a girl. Jamie Rose is lovely!
I wouldn’t be put off using a name if it was a neighbour or co-worked only a very close friend or family. Go with the one you love xx

DesertSnow · 07/01/2024 20:56

Esme
Nora
Bryony

You could still use the same name as a colleague used.

Unless a close friend or relative I would use the same name if I loved it.

Some suggestions..

I have a Sofia Rose. Couldn't you just have Rose? My DD often says she would have been happy with Rose although she does like her name

HoHoHoliday · 07/01/2024 21:10

Just pick the name you like the most and use it. It truly doesn't matter if your work colleague, neighbour, anyone else, has used the same name. What is this new silly fuss over having exclusive use of a name? A name cannot be "taken", it's allowed for more than one person to use it! As you go through life you will have different colleagues, different friends, different neighbours, your child will always remain your child. Choose the name you love the most and use it.
FWIW, all of the names you listed are completely fine and nice, except Marykate, as the poor girl will spend her entire life correcting people who assume her name is Mary Kate.

singswithitsfingers · 07/01/2024 21:11

Hi given you seem to have loads of friends and family that have had babies recently, does it matter if there's a bit of duplication? Obviously it's not great to have 6 with the same name, but just a couple is ok isn't it? It's going to happen in school anyway. Just choose a name you like. Classic ones are often best and never go in or out or fashion.

I agree, Jamie for a girl is lovely too! I grew up with sisters Jamie and Billie and always liked their names. Their names felt very 'cool' and unique.

Especially compared to my name, of which there were 6 in my class and we all ended up with a nickname with a slightly different spelling to differentiate.
