Jemima

No idea if it matters to you or not but apparently Sylvia is a middle aged woman's name in France. Not "cool" or "old lady cool" just sort of middle aged like maybe a Sharon or a Deborah might be here.

wasanneofcleves · 04/01/2024 19:52

Sorry I meant Sylvie

Jemima is fine.

After having lived in France for over 20 years I can confirm Silvie is not a 'trendy' name there. Absolutely nothing wrong with it but it's a bit like being called Debbie or Lisa in the UK. It's very common among 50/70 year olds.

A bit like the current UK trend to call baby girls Elodie - in France it's as common as Laura or Emma or Lucie. I feel like in the UK people think Elody is a cool, alternative, unique, uncommon name. Just my experience.

Jemima

PracticalPatricia · 04/01/2024 22:31

I prefer Sylvie. It's more grown up - I find jemima a bit babyish for some reason.

Onelife2024 · 04/01/2024 22:37

I prefer Sylvie - I can imagine myself being called that as an adult more easily than Jemima, which is lovely on a young child but personally I don’t think it works so well for a teenager or adult

MrsMop1964 · 04/01/2024 22:41

Jemima will always be either a Puddle Duck , or the doll off Playschool to me. Hence I chose Sylvie. Fortunately young people nowadays probably won't have those associations.

LulooLemon · 04/01/2024 22:50

Jemima

I much prefer Sylvie (also love Sylvia). It's a beautiful name. Jemima sounds a bit posh and silly to me.

apronbellybarbie · 06/01/2024 14:32

Love the name Jemima

FayCarew · 06/01/2024 14:45

Sylvia is awful. Makes me think of a 1970s brassy barmaid.

Mumofyellows · 06/01/2024 16:03

Sylvie is lovely, my beautiful French Godmothers name ❤️ Jemima, to me, is a duck.

Just wanted to say thanks for all the comments - so late I know! We named our daughter Jemima Primrose 💕

A lot of our older family members went all out on the Puddleduck gear, but it’s quite sweet really.
