What do you think?

Husband is pretty set on it. Goes well with our surname.

I like it but don't love it.. but it's growing on me.

What's your thoughts?

OP posts:

sunflowerpinks · 03/01/2024 08:29

It's not my style but if you like it, go for it.

theduchessofspork · 03/01/2024 08:31

It’s now very dated, and has the reputation of being ‘a naughty boy name’, so depends if those things bother you. A different name would be more helpful to him.

What a load of rubbish!

If you like it, OP, then go for it.

TequilaNights · 03/01/2024 08:36

Naughty boy name hahahaha

It's a lovely name, and not dated at all.

If you both like it, then use it.

What a load of bollocks! Since when has Ryan become a naughty boy name? ‘Naughty boy’ names is a fairly new way to describe certain names, so how can it be both new and dated? 😂
Op I’m Welsh and there’s loads of Ryan’s in certain areas of wales. I wouldn’t pick it, but there’s nothing wrong with it at all 🤷🏼‍♀️

Rosario99 · 03/01/2024 08:40

Nooo Ryan conjurs up naughty boy image. It's also boring and dated.

sunflowerpinks · 03/01/2024 08:50

I'm afraid I agree with the naughty boy connotation

BoleynMemories13 · 03/01/2024 08:56

Overdone in the 90s and early 00s. I've only ever taught two boys called Ryan in 15 years of teaching and both were in the first 3 years so would be late teens/early 20s by now. Whilst I wouldn't be surprised to meet a young Ryan these days, as I know it's still around to a lesser degree, it doesn't excite me.

Usually I'd say as long as you both like it that's all that matters but it doesn't sound like you're sold on it OP so I would definitely keep looking if I was you.

Nanasueathome · 03/01/2024 09:02

My baby is Ryan
He’s 43 now
I still love the name and he likes it a lot too

Sylver75 · 03/01/2024 09:03

Forget about other people's opinions. If you like it, go for it. Your child's personality is not determined by their name so ignore the "naughty boy" name thing.

I'm Irish and there's an Irish language version of Ryan which is Rian (Ree-an) which you could also consider.

MerryChristmasToYou · 03/01/2024 09:20

I like the name but agree with 'very dated, and has the reputation of being ‘a naughty boy name’

Hallesmellie · 03/01/2024 09:24

Saw this thread and came here to say ‘naughty boy’ too! Sorry if others think this is nonsense but it’s what a lot of people think apparently.

She should of course go for it if she likes it.

But it is dated, and it has that rep.

Purplecatshopaholic · 03/01/2024 09:28

Sorry, I agree it’s dated, and chavvy.

MerryChristmasToYou · 03/01/2024 09:29

Babies called Ryan in England & Wales since 1996 (darkgreener.com)

It makes me think of Ryan Giggs, Ryan Gosling, Ryan Reynolds and Ryan O'Neill.
It was very popular 20 yrs ago.

Irish names that become very popular outside Ireland don't tend to date well.

Oldermum84 · 03/01/2024 09:33

I love it.

Bbq1 · 03/01/2024 09:34

Not my cup ot tea but if you like it, use it. I know a young Rian, prefer that spelling.

Bellshellsrells · 03/01/2024 09:40

I think it's a lovely name, ignore these naughty boy comments. Hasn't done Ryan Gosling any harm!

MerryChristmasToYou · 03/01/2024 12:24

Ryan Gosling was named a long time before Ryan was popular so the association would not have been around then.

Whether or not the name is a 'naughty boy' name is not that relevant because the baby will be much younger than the ones named in the 1990s, but the thread suggests that many have this association.

I really like the name Terry, but that too was a 'bad boy' name in its time.

cursethebaggins · 03/01/2024 12:25

Love it

Dizzy82 · 03/01/2024 12:47

My son is a 'Ryan', he's 18 and a lovely boy. I wouldn't associate it as a naughty boy name or out dated!

KeeefBurtain · 03/01/2024 12:51

The only person I know with a Blue Peter badge is a Ryan. Definitely not a naughty boy 😅

MerryChristmasToYou · 03/01/2024 12:52

@Dizzy82 , it won't be dated for him but he's not a baby

Dizzy82 · 03/01/2024 12:55

I get that my son is 18 but still don't a child born now and given the name Ryan would be seen as outdated

CellarCaller · 03/01/2024 12:55

It's a great name.
