What do you think?

Husband is pretty set on it. Goes well with our surname.

I like it but don't love it.. but it's growing on me.

What's your thoughts?

Great, he’ll never have to spell it or clarify the pronunciation!

apronbellybarbie · 03/01/2024 13:00

Nice name and I've only ever met genuinely nice men called Ryan.

RuthW · 03/01/2024 13:11

Very old fashioned.

MerryChristmasToYou · 03/01/2024 13:16

@Dizzy82 , it was No 7 in 1996, and 6496 were registered that year. Noah was No 1 in 2021 and 4525 were registered. It's not dated yet, but a baby Ryan would be one of the youngest Ryans around until the name comes back into fashion, if it will.

I think that applies to a lot of names!

Violetparis · 03/01/2024 13:35

I just think of Ryan Giggs and 90's lads.

tokesqueen · 03/01/2024 13:35

Yep. One to avoid.

WaltzingWaters · 03/01/2024 13:37

Not sure why everyone is thinking of it as a ‘naughty boy’ name! I wouldn’t have that connotation at all.

I really like the name and think it’s still sounds pretty trendy whilst not being try hard or too popular.

MerryChristmasToYou · 03/01/2024 13:46

@WaltzingWaters, the name was wildly popular in the 1990s. Possibly made more popular by Ryan Giggs, who doesn't have the best reputation other than for being a remarkably good footballer who never got injured.

Some names become associated with naughty boys or tearaways. They usually have names that when you first hear them they sound cool but the names become too popular, so at least a few of them will be naughty, and those will be the ones who stick in mind.

coffeewithmilk · 03/01/2024 13:59

Thanks everyone for your responses!! Really interesting to hear different opinions on it!

Never thought of it as a 'naughty boy' name but that definitely made me laugh.. what's a name that would be the opposite of a 'naughty boy' name? 😂

I love it but it really is just Bryan without the B.

Still love it though.

Oh I completely get that, just that Ryan itself isn’t a name that I’d associate with ‘naughty boy’.

I think for me the name Ryan reminds me of the character from The OC who I had a teenage crush on (who did have a bit of a naughty boy streak too but was ultimately good haha!!)

Anyway, it’s a nice name OP, go for it!

MerryChristmasToYou · 03/01/2024 14:20

@coffeewithmilk , something a bit wet or goody-goody or something neutral.

ColleenDonaghy · 03/01/2024 14:23

Celtic names are always naughty boy names on MN! Grin

Having said that, I don't love it at all, and think of it more as a surname. I do know a little girl called Ryan! So perhaps it will become unisex if that's the start of a trend.

MerryChristmasToYou · 03/01/2024 14:37

If there is no obvious connection to the language/culture, I'd be inclined to agree. I'd also extend it to other languages and cultures and surnames as first names.

The ones that are 'NBN' or Mean Girls' Names tend to be inspired by a celebrity - footballers, F1 drivers, actors, pop stars, models, influencers.

Notalldogs23 · 03/01/2024 14:46

Opposite of 'naughty boy' name for me would be James or Oscar.

I'm sure there are plenty of other reasons that names are criticised in this way! But you see it all the time wrt very normal Celtic names - Conor, Liam, Ryan, Aiden, Cian all spring to mind and I know I've seen others I just can't think of them. Very much the Irish equivalents of James, Ben etc.

Yes, Irish names do have a reputation for being a bit declassee and unnecessary on Mumsnet, which is, I'm sure, a complete coincidence.

MerryChristmasToYou · 03/01/2024 15:16

@ColleenDonaghy , they are absolutely fine on Irish people.
It's not that they are Irish** that's the thing, it's that they become massively popular outside Ireland, and tend to have been inspired by a celebrity.

The names are often a bit dated in the original country.

** doesn't have to be Irish, could be Welsh or Italian or something

Shopper727 · 03/01/2024 15:20

My son is Ryan he’s 18 - 19 this year (jeez) he’s a lovely boy and he suits his name I think it’s a lovely name. I don’t like this ‘naughty boy name’ thing it’s not nice or needed!!

clara778 · 03/01/2024 15:21

Also thought naughty boy 😂

Good boy names, James, Edward, Oscar.

MerryChristmasToYou · 03/01/2024 16:22

@Shopper727 , it's just some people's opinion. Many people have opinions.
Even if you think you don't, you'd probably get some sort of an impression from a name.

Sundaysunshine21 · 03/01/2024 16:55

I don’t think it’s a ‘naughty boy name’, particularly not now as it would be quite unusual.

As others have said it was more popular in the 90s (I know a few around my age but no little Ryans). Personally I would see this as a plus because it’s unlikely there will be 5 others in his class, but it’s still a well known name so he won’t have any issues with pronunciation or spelling. It for some reason feels less dated to me than some other names that were popular in that era.

MerryChristmasToYou · 03/01/2024 17:06

It's not really a plus, more like being a 35 yr old Darren or Ian, when most people with that name are 20+ yrs older.

All the names are nice but popularity links them to a certain age group.

CharlieBoo · 03/01/2024 17:43

I don’t think of it as a naughty boy name at all. Makes me think of Ryan Reynolds or Gosling. It’s not as popular as it was as name trends change all the time, but he won’t be another Louis, Theo, Oscar, Noah.
