What do you think?

Husband is pretty set on it. Goes well with our surname.

I like it but don't love it.. but it's growing on me.

What's your thoughts?

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

Saw this thread and came here to say ‘naughty boy’ too! Sorry if others think this is nonsense but it’s what a lot of people think apparently.

That's exactly what I came to say too! It really is dated and has naughty boy connotations 😁

Trying2310 · 04/01/2024 23:00

I have a Ryan and he is 4. Suits it perfectly and is definitely not a naughty boy!

Wytchy · 04/01/2024 23:09

I fucking hate the twee term 'naughty boy name'.

Say 'too working class'. It's what you mean.

MerryChristmasToYou · 05/01/2024 12:02

But it doesn't mean 'too working class'. @Wytchy
It means (to me) a name that you associate with a boy who'd play up a lot.

There are 'posh' or MC names that I'd consider to be 'naughty boy names'.

I have no doubt that the corridors of Eton and Harrow are filled with naughty Tobiases and Ruperts and yet the only names that get mentioned on MN as Naughty Boy Names ™ are ones like Ryan, Kyle, Liam, Tyler, Kai...

MerryChristmasToYou · 05/01/2024 12:44

@Wytchy , I think you'd find that the corridors of Eton and Harrow are not filled with naughty Tobiases and Ruperts. The boys I know of in one of the mentioned schools have normal names that do not imply a particular background (e.g. James, Thomas, Edward, Alexander etc).

Some names appeal more to certain parents. I wouldn't pick a name like like Ryan, Kyle, Liam, Tyler, Kai because they don't appeal to me and look like they'd be a bit faddy.

I like the names Ryan and Liam but my DC have no Irish connection so wouldn't have used them. Kai and Kyle look a bit like names that might have been trendy in the1990s and Tyler makes me think of someone redoing my bathroom.

This is amusing. So keen to deny classism, so eager to let me know exactly which circles you move in.

10/10 for top mumsnetting.

Nah, she hasn't mentioned a muddy Labrador and tired old Volvo, only 8/10.

MerryChristmasToYou · 05/01/2024 12:58

@Wytchy , 10/10 to you. How I know these people has nothing to do with my class. Maybe I work as a cleaner in a school or something.

Can you give some examples please?

MerryChristmasToYou · 05/01/2024 14:35

@Marynotsocontrary , I could but that would probably out some people so best not to.

MerryChristmasToYou · 05/01/2024 14:42

@Marynotsocontrary , they'll be names in the #20 most popular boys names in about 15 years' time.

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 05/01/2024 14:43

Not a name I would have given to any of my children. However, one of my SILs is called Ryan, he's Australian and absolutely adorable, so that's what the name makes me think of. A broad accent, a big smile and a propensity for wearing shorts at all times.

For example...?

MerryChristmasToYou · 05/01/2024 15:15

@Marynotsocontrary , in my age group it would be something Nigel and Jason.

Viewfrommyhouse · 05/01/2024 15:27

I like it. I know a lovely young man called Ryan, so I have a nice association with the name.

SunnyFog · 05/01/2024 17:25

Saving Private Ryan
Ryan's Daughter - is that a film? No idea what but it makes me think of a rainy field.
IME all young Ryans are lively lads, see also Jake. Not naughty, but definitely sporty.

Roselilly36 · 05/01/2024 17:28

I love the name Ryan, great choice.

yirka · 05/01/2024 17:50

I'm not English so the class thing goes over my head. Most people outside of England won't have this connotation of Ryan.

I do think it's somewhat dated and 90s-sounding though.

MerryChristmasToYou · 05/01/2024 18:14

I 'm not English either @yirka , but I think that there might be people in the parts of Great Britain that are not England who do think of the connotation.

Wytchy · 05/01/2024 18:21

ah, so now you're admitting it's a class thing?

progress.

SemperIdem · 06/01/2024 12:30

I think it’s quite a “dad” age name at the moment. I’ve known a few Ryan’s and they’re all late 20’s-mid 30’s. Coincidentally they’ve all also been complete arseholes.

MerryChristmasToYou · 06/01/2024 12:36

@Wytchy , I have no idea how you got that from "I 'm not English either @yirka , but I think that there might be people in the parts of Great Britain that are not England who do think of the connotation."

Falkenburg · 06/01/2024 12:38

Not keen as I have known two and both were awful but it is a nice enough name.

I do think of Michael Ryan though.
