Any thoughts? The more honest the better! DD will be our first and we’re struggling, the only name that DH and I can agree on is Poppy but I’m not so sure

It's a yes from me because I have one (15)! I still love the name because it's pretty but also has underlying connotations of strength and resilience. She hates it though, thinks it's childish and prefers her middle name. Perhaps something to think about!

FirstFallopians · 02/01/2024 00:50

It’s one of those names like Luna or Bella that when you hear it being called in public there’s a 50:50 chance of turning round to a cute toddler girl or a Labrador.

This is absolutely true and our dog is often mixed up with our daughter ! It has a never bothered me but yes it is definitely equally a doggy name!

Passingthethyme · 02/01/2024 00:55

Cute for a kid, not so much anyone over 14

Bournetilly · 02/01/2024 00:56

I like it, it’s cute and I do think it’s nice for an adult (I know a few adults with the name Poppy) but it’s very popular so I wouldn’t personally use it. It’s up to you if you like popular names or not.

WhyAmINotCleaning · 02/01/2024 00:58

I like it. Yes, it could be a dog name, but a lot of pretty names are dog names because they are pretty.

DramaAlpaca · 02/01/2024 01:01

I find it very twee and cutesy, neither of which are attributes I like in names.

It's popular though, so clearly lots of people love it.

FairfaxAikmann · 02/01/2024 01:03

One I think is fine on a child but awful on an adult.

WhyAmINotCleaning · 02/01/2024 01:07

There are loads of lawyers called Poppy if you google, so it passes my sensible test.

Poppyandfifties · 02/01/2024 01:10

My name is Poppy and I am in my early fifties. I love my name and have done my whole life. It used to be very unusual. Apart from the occasional golden retriever or ladrador, I never met anyone else with the name. In recent years it has become more common, but I still love it. I have had a couple of different professional careers and the name has never been an issue.

abcdefghijkI · 02/01/2024 01:12

If I'm honest I've never liked this name or understood its popularity. I realise it's a flower but just going by the word/sound it sounds kind of silly to me.

CoffeeBeansGalore · 02/01/2024 01:19

Quite sweet.

Have you considered Pippa or Piper?

If it's the floral aspect you like, maybe
Lily
Rose
Violet
Briony
Willow
Jasmine

It's sweet. I have always preferred the name Polly.
Polly and Poppy team well with a serious, more classic, second name ..
Poppy Caroline
Poppy Isabelle
Polly Theresa
Polly Charlotte

One of my absolute favourite names - so much so, 29 years ago I named my daughter Poppy.

I still love it - and feel like it suits her. My daughter has positive and negative things to say about it - she knows I wouldn't be offended if she wanted to choose an alternative but has stuck with it so far.

Nicknames have ranged from Pops to Poopy - no prizes for guessing which one of those was thought of by her younger brother!!!

For a long time we didn't come across any other Poppys - just one lady, aged about 90, when my Poppy was about 3.

Twinklesis · 02/01/2024 03:17

I much prefer Violet as suggested upthread.

Onelife2024 · 02/01/2024 07:01

I really like Poppy. At the moment it’s hard to imagine an adult called Poppy as I haven’t met any, but that will change when all the little Poppy's grow up!
My dog is called Poppy, and it is commonly used for dogs (we often meet other dogs called Poppy), but I think that’s because it’s a 2 syllable, pretty name.

PurBal · 02/01/2024 07:11

I know a few little people and a couple of adults called Poppy, no dogs. I think it’s a bit cutsie for an adult and isn’t to my taste but if you like it then I don’t think there will be any raise eyebrows, it’s perfectly fine.

Justleaveitblankthen · 02/01/2024 07:16

It's the short version of the Greek name, Calliope which I love.

oldnorsesaga · 02/01/2024 07:39

I like the sound, but I think of poop and puppies when I see it written down. So, it's not my favorite, but most people might not see poop.

ParsnipAndPoppy · 02/01/2024 07:42

Will she have a brother called parsnip😉?

user1477391263 · 02/01/2024 07:54

Can't stand it, sorry. It's a very, very silly-sounding word.

Houselamp · 02/01/2024 08:30

I think it sounds nice, but we called my Grandfather Poppy or Pops

Pemba · 02/01/2024 08:32

I can see that it's the name of a lovely flower and probably sounds very fresh and young. Apart from being a bit juvenile maybe I think it is a name that is fine in the UK but doesn't travel well.

In other countries this pop-ee sound has other meanings and I think people in some European countries find it silly as a girl's name. In the USA I think it would also be unheard of as a girl's name and I have heard Americans using 'Poppy' as an extension of 'Pop', ie the equivalent of Daddy.

Sorry to bring it up, but just a factor to consider.

Lovecat · 02/01/2024 08:48

I work with an adult Poppy, it really suits her, but she's in her early 20s, physically quite small, with a still-girlish voice. I don't know if it would work as well if she were my age and size...

Mind you, I can’t talk, I go by a shortening of my own name which according to MN is abhorrent on anyone over 12, but being called my full name these days makes me feel like I'm in trouble with my mother.

peaceinourtime · 02/01/2024 09:28

Poppy is a beautiful name, I don’t understand the hate towards it.
