Any thoughts? The more honest the better! DD will be our first and we’re struggling, the only name that DH and I can agree on is Poppy but I’m not so sure

Lovely name but It has become a bit "help for heroes" / nationalist in the last few years.

It's the short version of the Greek name, Calliope which I love.

Never knew that! Loads of people probably call their kid Poppy without knowing it!

DesertSnow · 02/01/2024 09:40

I like it. If you're concerned about the cutesie factor, you could always use it as a middle name

theduchessofspork · 02/01/2024 09:51

I think it’s wet TBH - I just wouldn’t want to be called Poppy/Daisy/Lily as an adult - it’s too flower fairy

SlashBeef · 02/01/2024 09:57

I really dislike it but I'm not keen on many flowery names to be honest. Poppy, Lily, Daisy etc are all a bit blah.

NachosAndCheese · 02/01/2024 10:10

Twee, cutesy. Popular bordering on overused.

Always paired with the filler middle names of Rose/May/Grace. Boring.

TheBirdintheCave · 02/01/2024 10:12

It's a fine name, it's just massively overdone like Olivia, Sophia, Isabella etc.

blankittyblank · 02/01/2024 10:14

It's a lovely name. As of this year it's in the top 10 most popular girls names, in case you care about that.

TheaBrandt · 02/01/2024 10:14

Personally don’t think it works on an adult unless you are one of those cutesy women who wears dungarees and is very perky. Same bracket as Honey and Daisy. Hell would freeze over before a Dd of mine had a name like that.

NoelJo · 02/01/2024 10:16

I think it’s lovely but I would probably use it as a middle name.

Catsknowbest · 02/01/2024 10:18

I like it

TheGirlWhoLived · 02/01/2024 10:18

I have a poppy and I really wish I’d have gone for something a bit stronger! It’s a bit… wet and she’s a cracker. But her middle name is Delilah and I think that suits her a lot more! She quite likes Poppy but she wanted Tiffany a couple of years back so has no accounting for taste

roombaclean · 02/01/2024 10:18

Adore! Can be a nickname for Calliope in Greece, but that isn't the origin. Derives from Old English Popæg (Poppy). Who cares if it sounds silly in another culture? Many names do.

hotdiggetydog · 02/01/2024 09:29

Lovely name but It has become a bit "help for heroes" / nationalist in the last few years.

It's been the RBL flower symbol for over 100 years. It is not nationalist. Veterans household here.

Maireas · 02/01/2024 10:19

It's a bit of a marmite name, I don't like it because it's a bit twee, like Minnie, Dottie, Daisy, Maisie etc.
You could think of a more classic flower name that wouldn't date as much?

Stepbystepfan · 02/01/2024 10:28

It’s the ‘pee’ sounding bit at the end that I don’t like. Sorry 🙈 If you like the name then go for it! It’s nothing to do with anyone else. It’s not as if it’s offensive.

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 02/01/2024 11:07

I like it - pretty name .

Doublebiscuit77 · 02/01/2024 11:26

For a similar vibe, I prefer:
Polly,
Effie,
Molly,
Pippa as a nn for Philippa,
Flora,
Daisy,
Wren,
Emmy as a nn for Emily,
Immie as a nn for Imogen,
Tamsin (Tammy),
Sadie,
Bonnie,
Connie,
Callie,
Carrie,
Cassie as a nn for Cassandra,
Bea as nn for Beatrice/Beatrix,
Thea or Teddie for Theodora,
Nancy,
Peggy,
Penny as a nn for Penelope,
Sandy as a nn for Alexandra,
Josie as a nn for Josephine

There are loads of lawyers called Poppy if you google

That doesn't make the name any less twee and cutesy though Grin

Personally I find the sound of Poppy too similar to Poppet or Poppy. So twee and comical, sorry. You did ask for honest opinions though!

BoleynMemories13 · 02/01/2024 13:55

Our cat is called Poppy. She's a rescue, so we didn't pick it, but it suits her.

I'm not a fan for humans, purely because I don't think cutesy names age well. I wouldn't want to be an adult Poppy, Daisy, Rosie, Tilly, Molly etc.

Each to their own though. It's top 20 popular so plenty of people clearly do like it. Cutesy names are all the rage right now though so when she's an adult it will be completely normal to come across adults with such names.

Look at any EDL or FLA march, absolutely loads of poppies and lest we forget. Poppies are definitely hijacked to an extent by the right wing.

UsingChangeofName · 02/01/2024 17:37

I find it very twee and cutesy, neither of which are attributes I like in names.

I agree with this.
Sort of okay for a toddler / little girl but doesn't really suit teens and adults.

I agree with pp who said it is for a toddler or a Labrador.

Sorry, but you did ask us to be honest.

sunflowerpinks · 02/01/2024 17:44

Twee and cutesy and only one letter away from PoopyBlush

QuickDraining · 02/01/2024 17:48

Lovely name. I agree just throw in two middle names, and if they want to they can adopt the others later on. I like my real name, but it's not the one I am known by, and same goes for most of my family and friends, so it doesn't matter much. I find it fascinating how names find people. Get a list and decide when you need to.

So is the union flag. What extremists hijack is down to them. We don't see it that way- we see it as a symbol of remembrance.
