Which do you prefer and why? Sibling for Rafferty.

I love Etta but couldn't use Octavia or Ophelia without cringing personally.
Olive is a bit odd.

SuperBored · 29/12/2023 23:15

No more olives please...just think of olive off 'on the buses', actress made to look as ugly as the name

Talkwhilstyouwalk · 29/12/2023 23:15

Etta by far my favourite but doesn't go with Rafferty. To many et sounds.....

abcdefghijkI · 29/12/2023 23:17

I quite like Etta! The rest are too pretentious for me.

doggiedoodah · 29/12/2023 23:18

Olive and Rafferty are a perfect match ..both cool names .

43ontherocksporfavor · 29/12/2023 23:18

Ophelia

43ontherocksporfavor · 29/12/2023 23:19

Really not keen on Olive. Probably because of the Popeye cartoon .

The generation who like Olive have absolutely no interest in that show. I am 60 and genuinely cannot remember one of those programs 🤦‍♀️

43ontherocksporfavor · 29/12/2023 23:21

I imagine Ophelia might be nicknamed Phe(Fi) or Phelia.

43ontherocksporfavor · 29/12/2023 23:21

I really like olives but don’t want to name a child after them.

NannyR · 29/12/2023 23:23

I would go for Etta or Olivia. Octavia makes me think of the car, Olive will always be a murky green, salty, oily fruit to me, I can't understand its growing popularity.

I'm more than a decade younger than you and I know about it

toomanyleggings · 29/12/2023 23:26

Etta or Ophelia

I’m 39 and know who olive from on the buses was. It’s been repeated enough times on tv.

Thelineofbeauty · 29/12/2023 23:28

I like Octavia and have a 12 year old neice called Octavia and she is wonderful). I like Etta because as someone thread said Etta James is iconic.

@defi Montserrat as in the island? Holds fond memories if so which makes me like Ophelia more!

Op I personally don’t like Olive at all.

I never watched it and I love the name.

Lifeinlists · 29/12/2023 23:36

Etta sounds like the end of an actual name. Henrietta for eg.
Ophelia is pretentious. Octavia is ok if you have a distinguished surname to carry it off.
Olive is Popeye's girlfriend and very drab. Olivia is so much nicer.

PollyPeep · 29/12/2023 23:38

Olive and Rafferty are the only pairing that work for me as they kind of off-set each other. Olive brings Rafferty back down to earth and Rafferty livens up Olive.

Rafferty and Ophelia, Rafferty and Octavia both too pretentious for words. Etta seems unfinished as a name. How about Rafferty and Delphine, Rafferty and Beatrice, Rafferty and Seraphina?

Delassalle · 29/12/2023 23:41

Octavia the ostrich from Pipkins.
Olive from On the buses.

Etta - don't like it.

Ophelia - would be lovely if she's tall and willow as an adult but if she's a short dollop the name would be awful.

Rafferty and Eloise sound nice together.

43ontherocksporfavor · 30/12/2023 09:18

I don’t think you should take into account a sibling’s name. It has no bearing really unless wanting to avoid obvious silly sounding pairings such as Bill and Ben.

apronbellybarbie · 30/12/2023 09:22

Octavia

WaltzingWaters · 30/12/2023 09:24

Ophelia. Etta is nice too but I think Ophelia goes better with Rafferty.
Ottilie?
I’m not keen on Olive or Octavia personally.

AuntDilemma · 30/12/2023 09:26

Ophelia to me is the woman who drowned in Hamlet, so no.

Octavia is a bit posh wank but if you are posh, then yes it's fine. I do know an Octavia who is very posh, the name suits her. (I also have a name similar tbh, really wish it wasn't so wanky)

Olive - I think of Popeye!

Etta - like this.

ShakesP123 · 30/12/2023 09:33

My choices are obviously not well received! Fine with me though, i don’t want a snoozy name…e.g., a twenty millionth Olivia.

Surprised that Ophelia is considered pretentious though. If anything I was concerned that the upturn in popularity would make it a new Darcey/Tracy.

Portia would be more aspirational than Octavia.
