I am so stuck. I have girls' names galore, please give me nice slightly arty boys' names that won't get hugely popular in a year or two

have missed out 2nd half of thread so sorry for probable repetition, but-

Bartholomew
Mortimer

But I guarantee Mortimer will explode within 18 months. I have been saying that for 2 years, though.

(Finley the FE: 'if it rains, go inside immediately'. WTF?)

Ozias

I would never have thought of this until recently, but have been doing some family history research, and several people in my family in the past have had this name (including my great, great, great-grandfather).

It apparently means "the Lord is strength".

It isn't common, but I think is actually a nice name (you may disagree).

If I had known about it earlier, I may have used it in my ds's name (but too late for that now, he is 7!)

pointedegg · 16/03/2008 22:15

Osmosis

SoMuchToBits · 16/03/2008 22:17

Oh, come on now Pointy, are you taking the piss out of my great, great, great-grandfather?

Rowingboat · 16/03/2008 22:18

Oasis?
I like Shmozno as well

MrsJohnCusack · 16/03/2008 22:18

Zeus
Torquil
Everard
Fabrice
Fabien
Valentine
Rudolph
Evelyn
Mischa
Ezra
Eugene

WendyWeber · 16/03/2008 22:19

Cosmo is a real name, honest! Nosmo is a joke though, I think (eg Nosmo King)

pointedegg · 16/03/2008 22:20

oh no, bits. Your name sounds very suitable and it just reminded me of another possibility. Franny must explore every avenue

pointedegg · 16/03/2008 22:21

In fact, Osmo would cover several bases

SoMuchToBits · 16/03/2008 22:23

Ok then, I'll think of some more from my family - let's see.....

There were three brothers called Wallace, Horace and Elbridge. None of those are currently over-popular.

Or how about Harold (not Harry) or Herbert?

Eric? Leslie? (I don't like those two by the way, but they are not currently popular).

Tickle · 16/03/2008 22:24

Nice to see our ds's first and middle names getting approving nods thru the thread

Not sure if mentioned:

Aumale - very frrench
Hubble - oh so scientific
Kingsley - sort of swishy literary. Would have to be nicknamed til coming of age tho...

Tickle · 16/03/2008 22:27

Loved Arlo, Ludo, Ingo, and Ivo - but they don't work in danish so vetoed by DH. Finally got a Theo

SoMuchToBits · 16/03/2008 22:31

I'm still going for Ozias!

PaulaYatesBiggestFan · 16/03/2008 22:33

I like Ozias

SoMuchToBits · 16/03/2008 22:35

Oh good, PYBF. Although actually someone in my family (who married an Ozias) didn't like it. When their son was born, she rushed out to register his name as soon as possible so he wasn't an Ozias (he turned out to be a Desmond!)

Rowingboat · 16/03/2008 22:38

Cluedo?

MrsJohnCusack · 16/03/2008 23:20

how about Ozymandias (snigger)

Aitch · 16/03/2008 23:23

jedediah. franny won't choose frank, just to spite me.

snice · 16/03/2008 23:25

Have we had Arlo?

Aitch · 16/03/2008 23:26

oh yes. and milo and kilo and lilo and LYSANDER. honestly, she's going to call him Johnny, i just know it.

MrsJohnCusack · 16/03/2008 23:26

Jude

snice · 16/03/2008 23:29

Thanks Aitch-glad someones keeping a list

Aitch · 16/03/2008 23:30

francis is a lovely name, isn't it snice? that's the best one really...

snice · 16/03/2008 23:32

Sorry-my fave boys name is Hector but its more of an polar explorer than an arty type. How about Quentin?-I used to know a very handsome Quentin

Aitch · 16/03/2008 23:34

ACTUALLY! talking of polar explorers... what about Pen? as in Pen Hadow? he's great. i think Pen is a great name, is it short for something manly or will it be Penander or something equally stupid?
