I am so stuck. I have girls' names galore, please give me nice slightly arty boys' names that won't get hugely popular in a year or two

Aubrey, Wilfred, Siegfried, Theodore, Laurence, Djinn (Gin, great name )Herbert, Alfred, Gordon, Percy, William (it is popular, but you'd never know), Fitz, Waldo, Fox (Mulder - perhaps more geeky than arty?).

tripletsandtwins · 16/03/2008 00:57

I really like Nathaniel atm I don't think that's very popular.... also like Leander, and Leon

hedonia · 16/03/2008 00:57

hedonia · 16/03/2008 00:59

Rowingboat · 16/03/2008 01:05

This thread is hilarious. Loving Parsley and Hemp. Kip - could be a good omen for a baby who sleeps 12 hours a night.

Rowingboat · 16/03/2008 01:07

Hector is a great name! Lovely and classical. Or Humphrey, nice and noirish. I'm rambling, go to bed!

Rowingboat · 16/03/2008 01:09

What about an Irish name - Podraig (I think that's porrig} or Seamus, or Cornelius? No really going to bed now...

Anyway, here's my vote for unusual but not entirely unheard of names:

Noah

Amos

Storm

Gabriel

Franny - have you got a shortlist yet or are you still at zero?!

Dottydot · 16/03/2008 07:09

ooh yes - Theo is lovely

dozymare · 16/03/2008 07:24

Gabe

Horatio (really love this nice strong name and could be after Horatio Nelson the supremo Navy leader of the British who saved Britain being invaded by Napoleon?)

Erm - Napoleon!!!

Titus

Jasper

Maximus

Montgomery (monty)

WanderingTrolley · 16/03/2008 07:31

I have skimmed this thread somewhat, but have concluded Franny's surname is Boden.

Alban
Corben
Dantan
Rodin
Clive

Nighbynight · 16/03/2008 07:32

this thread reads like a class list at a really poncy prep school

franny dont do this to your unborn child - just call him John or Robert! By the time he's grown up a bit, John will be the new Caspian and Bob will be the new Orlando.

WanderingTrolley · 16/03/2008 07:37

No they won't.

They'll be John and Robert. Forever.

Nice names but I don't think it's what F&Z is after.

Nighbynight · 16/03/2008 07:42

not at all - he would probably be the only one in his class!

she wanted arty names - Jóhn Constable - Augustus John - Gwen John....

Janni · 16/03/2008 08:46

You want a name that wouldn't need to be whispered should he ever find yourself on the night bus in Peckham. Horatio? Ptolemy? Augustus?

Now names like Jude, Gabe, Eli, Finn etc are arty without being too farty. The child could still have a meaningful life beyond the wastelands of North Oxford or Hampstead.

Janni · 16/03/2008 08:47

'should he ever find himself'

WanderingTrolley · 16/03/2008 08:53

Horatio, Ptolemy and Augustus are great names - I applaud anyone who has one. These names should be used more.

I have been on a night bus in Peckham, with my good friends Farquar and Bunny, and none of us felt the need whisper because no one is allowed to speak on public transport in London. And yoofs can't speak, they just grunt and text. Innit.

TigerFeet · 16/03/2008 08:58

No, not Ptolemy. I remember a thread on here during the Restoration programme upon which someone called Ptolemy "Ptolemy the Ptwat". It made me snort and I will ever envisage Ptolemys at Ptwats.

Loving

Barnaby
Leo

What about Sidney? Very arty, and my grandfather was called that. Not very popular now though
