Help with spelling of Raeya

SillySausage21 · 09/12/2023 07:50

Hi there! Just had a baby girl called Raeya but I'm not too sure about the spelling! My partner liked Rhea but I felt that was pronounced like Ria but we want Rae-ah.. is there any other way we can spell it without having to say "its pronounced Rae-ah"

I've seen Reya, Raiya (unsure if that would be pronounced as (rye-ah) and Raya.

Any help is much appreciated 😀

I think Raya or Rayah is the only way you're going to consistently get it pronounced properly.

Sleepnplay · 09/12/2023 10:28

I know of two, both pronounced Reya. One is spelled Raiya and the other is Rhea. I did have to check pronunciation on the latter, but its not difficult once you know.

Raya works fine

Don’t think it needs complicating

Brandyginger · 09/12/2023 10:57

If you are struggling then it’s going to be a lifetime of spelling it out and mispronunciation.

Raya seems the best solution if you’re sure of the name.

BlowingAway · 09/12/2023 10:59

I'd go with Raya as the clearest pronunciation

Wrongsideofpennines · 09/12/2023 11:12

Raya is simplest I think.

Unhelpfully I recounted this thread to my partner who declared Rayer was the best option as it rhymes with layer and nobody mispronounces that 🙄

StillWantingADog · 09/12/2023 11:17

Raya def the best option

Reya ok

FayCarew · 09/12/2023 11:54

Raeya is too vowelly and it only makes it more complicated. Raya might get Rye-a pronunciation, especially if there are Mayas and Maias in her group, but it's the better spelling.

BoleynMemories13 · 09/12/2023 12:06

The only Raya I know is pronounced Ry-a so I think you'll just have to accept it's one of those names where you will have to correct people from time to time.

I would go for Reya personally, like the ending of Freya, but I guess even that could get Ree-ah.

PickledScrump · 09/12/2023 16:25

The Disney move Raya and the last dragon is pronounced Rye-a so I don’t think it’s the best if you want ray-a

Rhea I’ve met a few and always said like Ria

For the pronunciation you want Reya seems like the only unambiguous one

FayCarew · 09/12/2023 17:36

Ria would be easier but might result in an unfortunate nn. Same goes for Raya, I suppose.

I always propnounce this as Ray a. I do like Rayah too What about Raina ( Like Queen Raina of Jordan?) Then at least youre getting the ray-a sound.

Except Mary Berry who pronounces it ‘lair’!

SkyTree · 09/12/2023 17:50

I would say Rhea is pronounced how you want. To me, Raya would me ‘rye-ah’.

Sandysandwich · 09/12/2023 17:57

Raya, like Raya and the last dragon.

MrsAvocet · 09/12/2023 18:03

Another vote for Raya here.
If you are going to use a name that doesn't have a well known standard spelling I think it is best to keep it simple. Anything with multiple vowels has too much potential for misspelling and/or mispronunciation. And a rhea is a bird similar to an ostrich so I wouldn't use that if I were you.

wjpa · 09/12/2023 18:06

Raya is the most straightforward and usable version. However, it is also the name of a dating app.

Many say layer as lair. Prayer is pronounced prair.

Fenty1 · 09/12/2023 18:14

Raya for definite or you will never get people saying it correctly!!

I think it’s Queen Rania

Raya
Raeya is awful spelling, sorry

BunnyBunnyJabberJabber · 09/12/2023 19:18

Raja

BunnyBunnyJabberJabber · 09/12/2023 19:18

Raia, even.
