Italian or Spanish name for baby girl

🆘 Hello lovely mums, I desperately need some help choosing a name for my baby girl who arrived early and rather dramatically and I'm now nearing the registration date and still haven't decided on a name. I keep thinking I have decided on a name I love and then finding something wrong with it. We are Italian/Spanish heritage and my 3 year old son has a very Italian name beginning with A. For that reason I would love for baby girl to have an 'A' name too, although it's definitely not necessary. I love names that have to do with the sky, sun, stars, gods/goddesses or anything classical Italian/Spanish/Latin etc. I'm not keen on the super popular names - of which there are now a lot with Italian roots. My absolute favourite name is Aurora but our last name is very short beginning 'Ro' and it just sounds terrible with the R repeated three times. In fact any name with an R near the end doesn't sound great. For example, I like Aria too but even that sounds like too many R's near each other. The R is not a deal-breaker but probably trying to avoid. Any help would be so appreciated! Starting to go stir crazy! Xx

@SerenityNowInsanityLater I LOVE your suggestion Gioia. Do you think there would be an issue with spelling/pronunciation? I know it's actually very easy to say once you know how to say it but I can imagine first attempts being something like Gee-oh-ai-a! What do you think?

Native English speakers who aren't familiar with Italian would almost definitely need advice on how to pronounce that the first time they encountered it (eg every new teacher presented with the register to read). But that's not necessarily a big deal.

@verabarbleen I love Alba, thank you

@FoxtrotOscarFoxtrotOscar love Angelica but it is almost the same as my son's name. If I thought I could get away with two angels I definitely would! But probably not quite fair to either of them and people might think I was crazy 🤣

@Doublebiscuit77 thanks for your suggestions, I like Alessia a lot - I was worried it sounded too similar to Alexa so I had ruled it out. But what do you think?

@Kyliemichelletaylor I really love Allegra as well, and the meaning (like Gioia too). Sadly I'm just a bit worried about the r near the end which makes saying our surname (beginning with R) straight after a bit of a mouthful! But maybe I need to rethink whether that's a problem or not. It just somehow doesn't flow. I'm so disappointed that this has ruled out quite a few names I like!

Alessia is lovely.

Newsenmum · 06/12/2023 21:04

First thought was Alma

Also love Valentina although definitely not an A.

It’s very different to Alexa !

BriocheBriocheBrioche · 06/12/2023 21:08

Not an A name but I love Paloma.

Fjrmum2 · 06/12/2023 21:09

@FoxtrotOscarFoxtrotOscar I really like Valentina a lot - feels literary, classic and romantic - but I think it would get shortened to Val or Tina which I'm no keen on, and that's putting me off a bit.

Congratulations!

How about Amalia?

Also Spanish background here - if we’d had girls, we were going for Catalina and Elena, (we then had boys 🤣).

geoger · 06/12/2023 21:11

Ambra

JoeLovesGina · 06/12/2023 21:31

Astrid
Astra

Fleur405 · 06/12/2023 21:35

I would personally go with Alba because it meets your requirements and means dawn in Italian (and I think also in Spanish).

I really liked Elena (which means shining light) but I would have wanted the Italian pronunciation and I think the Spanish v Italian is too much of a problem.

I do also love love love Gioia!

Starabella · 06/12/2023 21:49

My favourite Italian girls names which are all also pretty universal are;

Isabella
Eva
Giusy
Serena
Francesca
Aurora
Arianna
Marianna
Stella

Or how about Aurelia? It's got a similar vibe to Aurora without the r sound.

Starabella · 06/12/2023 22:05

Love also Gioia and Gianna!

DancinOnTheCeiling · 06/12/2023 22:05

Alba

Amaya

DancinOnTheCeiling · 06/12/2023 22:07
