Jacqueline

Thoughts on Jacqueline for a baby girl?
It's my mum's name and I also think it sounds very pretty. Middle name would be rose.

I don't know any young girls called Jacqueline though so does it come across as old ladyish? Tried searching on Mumsnet for Jacqueline threads but they're all about the author Jacqueline Wilson which is unusual because it seems there's at least one thread for every other name. So does this mean no one is naming their daughter Jacqueline?

I think it's time hasn't come yet. It's similar to Barbara, of a generation but the 1950s names are still taking precedence for now.

It's a lovely name but difficult if you're learning to spell (I have one in my family). Is your mum known as Jacqueline or Jackie; she's likely to be called the latter.

Candleabra · 23/11/2023 13:13

I think it’s a lovely name

User6761 · 23/11/2023 13:14

I knew 3 Jacquelines when I was a child - they would now be aged late 40s/early 50s. Two were known as Jacqui/Jackie. Haven't heard it used on anyone younger than that.

TheBirdintheCave · 23/11/2023 13:15

I know one who goes by Jack :) Nothing wrong with Jacqueline. It's a recognisable name with a variety of diminutives but there were only 22 born last year so your DD would have quite a rare name. Kind of the gold standard really! Familiar but not common.

Dizzydials · 23/11/2023 13:16

I don’t think it’s ready for a come back, it’s in the same sort of era as Sharon, Gary, Nigel etc. But if you love it choose it.

IsThePopeCatholic · 23/11/2023 13:20

I find it a bit bland.

TheCountessofLocksley · 23/11/2023 13:20

It's my name! I have mixed feelings about it really. I shortened it as a teenager so no-one (bar one very aged Aunt) calks me Jacqueline anymore.

I associate with a middle aged (and older wins ) because that's what I am!

All the different (mis) pronunciations will drive you/her mad. Another reason JacJacs/Jacqui/Jackie is more commonly heard.

TheaBrandt · 23/11/2023 13:28

Unfortunate associations. The ones I have known sadly have been evil hopefully your mum is nice. So Couldn’t call a baby this name.

LiquoriceAllsorts2 · 23/11/2023 13:40

I like it but I think Jacqui is too dated so would come up with another shortening that you could use sometimes.
Could Jac, Lena/Lina or Quin work. I know the last two don’t really come from Jacqueline but they are sort of in there.

DuchessOfSausaage · 23/11/2023 13:49

It's fine but she'll probably get Jackie/Jacqui, Jack, Jax, 'Jackleen', and it might get misspelled.
I know one who is Jacky, and one who with the exception of one friend is always Jacqueline.

LoreleiG · 23/11/2023 13:52

I think it really nice. My French teacher was called it. Jackie Kennedy. It’s chic. Not like Barbara at all!

IamMaz · 23/11/2023 14:00

I think it's lovely.

makeminealargeoneagain · 23/11/2023 14:17

Can you use it as a middle name? Really not keen on it as a first name.

Liv999 · 23/11/2023 14:24

I know an 11 year old Jacqueline, named after Jackie Kennedy, she lives in the USA, I agree with a previous post that it's not in the same league as Barbara or Sharon, its very sophisticated I think

peaceinourtime · 23/11/2023 14:30

It’s a lovely names, I wouldn’t worry about misspellings as people will learn.

Fifthtimelucky · 23/11/2023 14:35

I have known lots of Jacquelines - all around my age (early 60s). It's not a name I'm particularly keen on.

One problem is the different spellings of the shortened version. I used to work with a Jacquie and a Jacqui and often got them confused. I also know some who use Jackie, and some Jax.

Jacqueline goes well with Rose though.

MuddledMadge · 23/11/2023 14:49

I know a Jacqueline who is 22 and doesn't like her name. She goes by Jay.

DuchessOfSausaage · 23/11/2023 14:54

I know a Jay who is Jacqueline on her BC

I'm guessing you don't have a name that people misspell or mispronounce 😂 even my French teacher mangled it due to her extremely strong West Yorkshire accent 😂

menopausalmare · 23/11/2023 15:00

Lovely and not old ladyish at all.

Nap1983 · 23/11/2023 15:01

Get back to the 80s where you belong Jacqueline!!
Any around my age (40) go by nic names.

CurlewKate · 23/11/2023 15:06

None in the UK since 2017-so genuinely unique! I think it's lovely. Go for it!

There were 22 born in England and Wales in 2021.

Blinkityblonk · 23/11/2023 15:09

I'm not crazy about Jackie, which is what you'd probably end up with. Not terrible, the longer name, but too many shortenings.

17caterpillars1mouse · 23/11/2023 15:12

I like it. It has a classy retro feel to it in the same way I feel Pamela does and Felicity (though Felicity seems to have risen to popularity again).

I don't think it's dated and having a well recognised but not very often uses name is a good thing in my book
