Thoughts on Jacqueline for a baby girl?
It's my mum's name and I also think it sounds very pretty. Middle name would be rose.

I don't know any young girls called Jacqueline though so does it come across as old ladyish? Tried searching on Mumsnet for Jacqueline threads but they're all about the author Jacqueline Wilson which is unusual because it seems there's at least one thread for every other name. So does this mean no one is naming their daughter Jacqueline?

Honestly why do you care what a bunch of strangers on the net think about the name? Some might love it, some might not. Do you like it? Do you think your young child/teenage/adult daughter will like it?

Jacqueline looks quite pretty but its diminutive, Jackie etc are not great in my opinion so that would be something you would need to consider. I know a woman in her early 20s called Jackie but when I think of the name in general, I think of women in their 50s or 60s.

I have an equivalent type of name (perfectly find in its era but absolutely not making a comeback and probably won’t ever).

I really hate my name. People on reading or hearing it assume I’m in my 60s (I’m mid 30s), I hated it at school, it’s just not a nice name. I really resented my parents for a long time for giving me such a name and my mum also regrets it. The kindest comments I have ever had have been from well meaning kids who say oh I have a Great Auntie X or my grandma is called X - and hearing that when you’re a teen or in your twenties is not fun.

I would use it as a middle name rather than a first name.

I went to school with one my age, she'd be in her early 30s now so not too old.

I did too - but someone 30+ years older than me would have gone to school with plenty of people with my name too and honestly, that didn’t make me feel better growing up with my name 🤣

It isn’t an awful name, it’s similar to Jacqueline in so much as it’s not one of the traditional names that have enjoyed/are enjoying a renaissance at the moment, and I wouldn’t recommend it!

Hmm, it could grow on me.

Juno84 · 26/11/2023 23:40

It’s an awful name (I can say that as it’s my name!)

Only my parents call me by that name and I cringe every time. I grew up to be more of a tom-boy and HATED Jacqueline.

I go by Jacquie or Jacques and it is rarely ever spelled correctly by others. I have seen so many variations of it on Christmas cards over the years.

“Jax” is immature but is inevitably what most of her friends will end up calling her, pretty much because it is easier to spell.

Jacqueline Rose is an ultra-feminine name, just please be prepared that not all girls grow up to be ultra-feminine.

HolidayAddict23 · 27/11/2023 04:21

I wouldn’t inflict it on a baby

PumpkinsAndCoconuts · 27/11/2023 06:40

It’s one of these name that should be good. But it somehow isn’t (yet).

my response is influenced by me being a German speaker. And the name’s association in Germany really isn’t particularly great.

Rose is lovely!

And then we give ourselves new names / or choose more masculine nicknames.
Leonora can choose to go by Leo, Frederica by Freddie, Josephine by Jo etc.

that’s what I did and it’s one of the reasons I like my “frilly” (and ultra-feminine) name.

Justnoidea · 30/11/2023 21:19

Great name. I think it’s sophisticated and beautiful. Love the diminutives as well - Jackie is really sweet for a little girl, Jax is cool.

I think you will start a trend OP!

SiennaMillar · 30/11/2023 21:27

It’s in the same camp as Judith, Paula, Tracey, Yvonne for me.

NomenNudum · 01/12/2023 22:24

How about Jacquetta for a classy alternative?

WaltzingWaters · 01/12/2023 22:32

My mums name 🩵 She’s unfortunately passed away now, so if DC2 is a girl, it’ll be the name we go for.

Daisybuttercup12345 · 02/12/2023 00:19

Very refreshing.

2chocolateoranges · 02/12/2023 00:21

Personally I wouldn’t use it as a first name, if you are honouring a family member I’d go for a middle name.

i find it a bit frumpy and old fashioned. The Jaqueline’s I know go by Jackie.

ammyy · 02/12/2023 18:14

I like it! And I like the nickname Jac .

Cammac · 02/12/2023 18:26

If you like it go for it 👍

If parents can name their DCs Arthur, Archie, Millie, Amelia, Jack, Maisie, Charles, Henry, Frankie, Eric etc then you can name your DD Jacqueline.

Im nearing 60 and all the above names were names of my friends GP’s when I was growing up.

Barbara, Gillian, Winifred, Kenneth, Keith, Cyril, Derek, Nigel, Hilda and Mariliyn be popular soon 🥴

BroccoliniFloret · 03/12/2023 22:31

Agree Jacquetta is more fun then she can be Etta for short.
I think Jacqueline is really lovely but not the nicknames of it.
Pamela, as a pp said is a really gorgeous name of that era. As is Christine.
