Rosalie - thoughts and pronunciation?

Poppins2016 · 17/11/2023 01:47

What are your first thoughts about the name Rosalie?

And how do you pronounce it? I place equal emphasis on all syllables whereas DH often pronounces it "Rosa-Lee" which is putting me off (anything ending -Lee /-Leigh is very much not my cup of tea).

We'd probably use nicknames Rose/Rosa/Rosie, so we can get round DH's pronunciation, however if the way DH sounds it appears to be "mainstream" it'll drive me nuts and we might need to re-think...!

Sorry I don't understand how you would pronounce it?

I would read that as Rosa-lee but obviously if introduced and verbally told a different pronunciation I would use that.

theduchessofspork · 17/11/2023 01:52

I would say it as you describe but if he’s saying Rosa Lee that is off putting.

It’s a bit gypsy rose lee even if said properly - how about Rosanna?

Loub55 · 17/11/2023 01:58

I half considered this name as I like Rosie but wanted something longer. I would pronounce it Rosa-Lee but I guess it could also be roz-a-lee, is that what you prefer?

I think you will get people saying both.

Saschka · 17/11/2023 02:00

It’s ROZalee surely, stress on the first syllable like Rosamund or Rosalind or Rosaline.

If Rosa-Lee is getting on your nerves, how about any of those three alternatives?

My DH would love that you're backing him up! 😁

I pronounce it rose a lee, with no emphasis on any particular syllable. As opposed to rose a leee with emphasis at the end of the word.

A family member is called Rosalie (happy for us to use her name if that's what we decide) and "my" pronunciation is how she/we have always pronounced her name, so it seems "normal" to me, but perhaps that's because we're so familiar with it/perhaps it's even a "family" pronunciation?!

I have cockney parents. It makes me think of a cup of tea. Although more Rosy Lee but it was the first thing I thought of.

Poppins2016 · 17/11/2023 02:09

Definitely not "Rozalie" for me! That variation in pronunciation hadn't even crossed my mind!

...dislike of the "Roz" pronunciation is the reason I've already ruled out Rosamund and Rosalind.

Perhaps we should simply consider Rose or Rosa... 🤔

Ros-a-ley, I think; french style?!

frenchfancy81 · 17/11/2023 02:17

Or more like Roz-za-lee

LiquoriceAllsorts2 · 17/11/2023 05:09

The name has too many pronounciations so put me off it. I would say it as Roz-uh-lie or like your husband.
I can’t actually figure out your pronounciation

mathanxiety · 17/11/2023 05:14

I'd pronounce it ROSE-a-lee.
Like cozily but starting with R.

Allie22 · 17/11/2023 05:30

My name is Rosalee, my parents liked Rosa and Lee and didn't want it to be spelt like 'Rosa-lee' or 'Rosa-Lee'. It oftenly is frustrating having the double ee's as everyone spells it as Rosalie. Even it I tell them double 'e' they some how put the 'e' elsewhere. Have had all these forms of spelling other than the ones i have mentioned above after saying it ends with two 'e's I just dont think people listen lol: Rosealie, Rosaelie, Rosaelee, Rosealee, Rose-alie, Rosaellie.
If you are keen on the name Rosalie please please pronounce it Rosa Lie if you don't like the double ee sound. Lie as in 'don't lie to me.' My friend funny enough is called Rosalie and pronounces her name like this and says everyone spells hers correctly, but reads it as the double e sound lol

Allie22 · 17/11/2023 05:39

Ps I pronounce my name Rose ah lee to people (from New Zealand) and had a child called Rosa-Lee in my class in college pronounce hers Rosah Leigh with (was another reason my parents didn't want that spelling as they had my knick name is Rosee.

mathanxiety · 17/11/2023 05:44

That's a bonkers pronunciation.

The 'lie' ending is pronounced 'lee'.
Amelie
Coralie
Millie
Ellie
Hallie
Hollie
Natalie
Callie
Billie
Ainslie
Nellie

(The emphasis isn't on the 'lie' in any of those names, and it's not on the 'lie' in Rosalie either.)

Allie22 · 17/11/2023 05:59

Coralie can be pronounced lie so I would take that off the list. Coralie (lie sound) is actually a character on a kids show/movie. The lie sound on my friends name Rosalie comes from a different country (not British or American or French) they pronounce things completely different for names Aaron sounds just like Erin but here they are completely different sounding (New Zealand.)

ApolloandDaphne · 17/11/2023 06:32

I would say more Rosa-lay

Poppins2016 · 17/11/2023 06:47

Morning! For clarification... my preferred pronunciation (and the one I thought was "normal") rhymes with the word cosily and would be said similarly to "Amelie" or "Natalie" (no particular emphasis on the "lie").

OP posts:
StamppotAndGravy · 17/11/2023 06:57

Haha, now you've got even more problems because I would say cosily the same as Amelie. My aunt was Rosalie, pronounced Roz-A-lee but without a particularly strong emphasis, the same a Amelie or Emily

Wishthiswasntthecase · 17/11/2023 07:02

I’ve only known one. Her pronunciation was yours. Her MIL called her Rosie Lee. She git many gypsy nickna.Mrs. She went by aRosie most of the time. She was my mothers friend. Now pushing 70

Poppins2016 · 17/11/2023 07:08

Ok. So. Alternative names...

My two sons have very classic names (along the lines of Charles/Charlie or William).

Baby number three is a girl.

I'd like her to have a name with decent nickname options, e.g. Rosie is a pretty nickname but wouldn't go on the birth certificate.

I like pretty, feminine and (mostly) classic names.

E.g.:

Rose (this will feature somewhere in some form, even if just a middle name, I don't care that it's popular at the moment...)
Rosa
Rosalie
Clementine
Meredith
Amelie/Amelia (too popular but very pretty)
Ophelia (bit OTT for us but very pretty)
Luna (pretty but not classic enough)
Esmé (pretty but the acute accent/accurate pronunciation will drive me nuts...)
Daisy (can't use)
Freya (can't use)
Arabella (can't use)

Any suggestions?!

It's Roz-a-lee I'm sure. It was in my list for DD but didn't go with it in the end. Nice name but one of the reasons I didn't go with it is because I wanted a name that had one, obvious, pronunciation!

RosaElize · 17/11/2023 07:11

Sorry, I would say Roz - a - lee, line Rosalind

just Rosa is gorgeous

Ottilie?

wokbun · 17/11/2023 07:12

Amelia isn't popular anymore?

Luna is quite popular round here

Heatherbell1978 · 17/11/2023 07:13

This was my list! DD now 6. I'm in Scotland so some of these have a Scottish 'twang'. I did go with one of them!
