Rosalie - thoughts and pronunciation?

Poppins2016 · 17/11/2023 01:47

What are your first thoughts about the name Rosalie?

And how do you pronounce it? I place equal emphasis on all syllables whereas DH often pronounces it "Rosa-Lee" which is putting me off (anything ending -Lee /-Leigh is very much not my cup of tea).

We'd probably use nicknames Rose/Rosa/Rosie, so we can get round DH's pronunciation, however if the way DH sounds it appears to be "mainstream" it'll drive me nuts and we might need to re-think...!

I'd pronounce it ROSE-a-lee.
Like cozily but starting with R.

Exactly this. I don’t think I have ever come across the first syllable pronounced ‘Roz’ with a short ‘o’ (like the ‘o’ from ‘mop’).

HappyHealthy23 · 17/11/2023 07:17

Ophelia Rose is lovely.

HAF1119 · 17/11/2023 07:24

I read it like Roz a lee (so a hard o not a rose)

I guess if you're particularly attached to the way it should be said it may not be the right name simply because you will get plenty of different pronunciations

CastleTower · 17/11/2023 07:25

I think you must mean that you pronounce it with the emphasis on the first syllable:

ROSE-uh-lee

Whereas your husband pronounces it as though it's two names, with a double emphasis?

ROSE-uh LEE (as though spelled Rosa Lee)

Is that right?

Anyway, if that's right I agree with you.

Primproperpenny · 17/11/2023 07:26

Also thought cup of tea.

boochristmas · 17/11/2023 07:27

roza-lee. I watched Twilight.

RoseAndRose · 17/11/2023 07:28

I would pronounce it Roz-a-lee - same pattern as Rosalind being Roz-a-lind

(and the only ones I know in RL both pronounce it this way)

Even with this pronunciation (which is the older, Germanic version), people still use Rosie as a nn

Ok. So. Alternative names...

My two sons have very classic names (along the lines of Charles/Charlie or William).

Baby number three is a girl.

I'd like her to have a name with decent nickname options, e.g. Rosie is a pretty nickname but wouldn't go on the birth certificate.

I like pretty, feminine and (mostly) classic names.

E.g.:

Rose (this will feature somewhere in some form, even if just a middle name, I don't care that it's popular at the moment...)
Rosa
Rosalie
Clementine
Meredith
Amelie/Amelia (too popular but very pretty)
Ophelia (bit OTT for us but very pretty)
Luna (pretty but not classic enough)
Esmé (pretty but the acute accent/accurate pronunciation will drive me nuts...)
Daisy (can't use)
Freya (can't use)
Arabella (can't use)

Any suggestions?!

My youngest daughter is called Jocelyn. We say Joss-Lynne, but many people pronounce it Joss-uh-Lynne, including herself, which isn’t really a problem for us. And yet more come up with various different, often ridiculous versions which she dislikes (teachers at school, for example, have called her Joss-uh-line, Jock-uh-lynne, Joe-suh-lynne etc). She introduces herself as Joss now, which is what we generally call her and we take the mispronunciation lightly but I’d definitely be prepared for it if you go with Rosalie, which I’d pronounce your way for what it’s worth.
Elder daughter is Lois, and you’d think everyone would have heard of Superman’s girlfriend but alas, that gets mangled too.

FeedMeSantiago · 17/11/2023 08:41

I know a Rosalie who pronounces it Rose a lee.

In my accent the difference between Rose a Lee and Rosa Lee isn't that substantial. It's a nice name.

I think Rose or Rosa are both lovely too and they're easier to pronounce. Quite a few of the longer Rose names have multiple pronunciations or pronunciation which isn't as clear. Like Rosemary - I've heard people pronounce it Rose Marie, like the herb and also Rose Mary.

icelollycraving · 17/11/2023 08:44

I just think of a nice cup of Rosie.

WeeSleekitCowrinTimrousBeastie · 17/11/2023 08:45

Love it and pronounce it

Rosa-Lee

That's a bonkers pronunciation.

The 'lie' ending is pronounced 'lee'.
Amelie
Coralie
Millie
Ellie
Hallie
Hollie
Natalie
Callie
Billie
Ainslie
Nellie

(The emphasis isn't on the 'lie' in any of those names, and it's not on the 'lie' in Rosalie either.)

In my Scottish accent the first two end with lee

Amelie - ah-mah-lee
Coralie - cor-ah-lee

But these all end with lay

Millie - mill-lay
Ellie - ell-lay
Hallie
Hollie
Natalie
Callie
Billie
Ainslie
Nellie

Gemstonebeach · 17/11/2023 09:00

Its my middle name and I pronounce it the same way as you, not with the Rosa and Lee almost seperate like your husband does. No one has ever pronounced it starting with roz, as that’s not how it is pronounced!

Gloschick · 17/11/2023 09:05

I knew a Rosalia when I was younger and loved the name since. Would that be any good?

BarnacleBeasley · 17/11/2023 09:11

Okay, so I think the issue is not pronunciation (you and DH pronounce all separate syllables the same way) but syllable stress. It also seems to me that you're not actually stressing all syllables equally, but instead placing a very slight emphasis on the first one. Your DH is stressing both the first and the last one. Most people do what you do, not what your DH does, so I don't think you need to worry that his pronunciation is mainstream. But I would not use the name if he either genuinely can't hear the difference (so will keep doing it), or if he prefers his version and doesn't like yours.

TheBeesKnee · 17/11/2023 10:15

How about Eliza?

Ah I love Rosalie and Clementine! You do need to be aligned with your DH on pronounciation though. As someone above said I would pronounce ROSE a lee but Rosa and Rosie are gorgeous abbreviations. My DH wouldn't let me have Clementine because he hated "Clemmie."
Also on my list was Victoria (discounted by DH as our surname is D and he didn't want a child with initials VD)
Our DD is actually Cecilia which I think has similar vibes to the names in your list, I also like Cecily.

BlazingWorld · 17/11/2023 10:30

I would say Rosa-Lee but I would also say Amma-Lee. I can see how you would pronounce Rosalie to rhyme with cosily but struggling to say Amalie any other way than family without the F.

TheBirdintheCave · 17/11/2023 10:32

Allie22 · 17/11/2023 05:59

Coralie can be pronounced lie so I would take that off the list. Coralie (lie sound) is actually a character on a kids show/movie. The lie sound on my friends name Rosalie comes from a different country (not British or American or French) they pronounce things completely different for names Aaron sounds just like Erin but here they are completely different sounding (New Zealand.)

That's Coraline which is a different name (though possibly the same route as it was coined in the 1800s by a French composer for an opera) from the French name Coralie.

Do you mean Coraline for the kids movie character? Not Coralie

Op I’d say Rosalie similar to you would I think. Things like twilight has made people a lot more aware of how to say it, I don’t think you’d get that many roz pronunciations. The main thing is if you love it.

susiedaisy1912 · 17/11/2023 10:41

Rosa lee

thirdistheonewiththehairychest · 17/11/2023 11:01

We almost chose this name, pronounced ROsalie (with the emphasis on the first syllable)

DuchessOfSausage · 17/11/2023 11:38

Rosa - nice
Rosalie - not keen
Clementine - satsuma
Meredith - horrible
Amelie/Amelia- Amelie is boring, don't like Amelia
Ophelia - tragic
Luna - awful
Esmé - spelling & pronunciation

Suggestion: Rosalind
I'd say Rosalie as Rozz-uh-ly
