Rosalie - thoughts and pronunciation?

What are your first thoughts about the name Rosalie?

And how do you pronounce it? I place equal emphasis on all syllables whereas DH often pronounces it "Rosa-Lee" which is putting me off (anything ending -Lee /-Leigh is very much not my cup of tea).

We'd probably use nicknames Rose/Rosa/Rosie, so we can get round DH's pronunciation, however if the way DH sounds it appears to be "mainstream" it'll drive me nuts and we might need to re-think...!

Susannah. Susie as a nickname. Cute, classic, underused.

Susannah Rose.

Poppins2016 · 17/11/2023 14:25

I'm going to re-think Rosalie, it's just not going to work with the pronunciation issues!

There have been some lovely suggestions, thanks. Currently thinking I'll add Annabelle and Madel(e)ine to the list (although not keen on nn Maddie).

Please keep the suggestions coming... time is on my side (only halfway through pregnancy), but I do like to take time to mull things over... 😁

Maybe Lena as a more classic name than Luna? Others could be:

Frances
Genevieve
Caroline
Adelaide
Adele
Matilda
Marianne
Cosette
Charlotte
Josephine

I think it’s quite nice. I would assume that it’s pronounced as Roz-ah-lee

Poppins2016 · 18/11/2023 07:31

Just had a quick search and it appears that Rozalie is an American pronunciation which must have crossed over to the UK. (Wonder if Twilight had anything to do with it?!)

I'm going to add Genevieve to my list, it's very pretty!

My aunt was Rosalie

It was pronounced'Rosa-Lee' your DH is correct

RebeccaCloud9 · 18/11/2023 07:42

Oh so you emphasise the first syllable then! I was unable to hear a difference in how you were describing yours and your husband's pronunciation.

SharonEllis · 18/11/2023 07:45

I wouldn't choose a name that me and my partner pronounce differently. That would tell me something?! Poor kid will be correcting pronunciation & spelling for the rest of her life.

Bookworm1111 · 18/11/2023 07:45

I know someone with the name. She’s a Rozzer-lee.

Love just simply Rosa. I know a lovely lady by that name, she's the only Rosa I've ever met

OuiOuiMonAmiJeMappelleLafayette · 19/11/2023 00:10

So confused as to how you pronounce Rosalie!

From only ever seeing it written in a book I pronounced it Rosa Lee but quicker! Rosa to rhyme with poser and Lee to rhyme with see.

I did hear it in a film pronounced Rozz a Lee. 'Rozz' like at the beginning of the rozzers (slang for police) and then 'a' like the start of apple and Lee to rhyme with see.

The only other way I can imagine (at a push) it being pronounced is.

Rose ahh lee
Rozz ahh lee

The ahh sound is like when a doctor wants to look at your tonsils and you have to say 'ahh'

Please record yourself saying it and post it on here!

I can remember hearing people pronounced it Roz-alie (which I prefer) when I was a kid in the 70s.

TheBirdintheCave · 20/11/2023 08:31

@OuiOuiMonAmiJeMappelleLafayette So. OP is saying the name Rosalie with three syllables.

Rose-a-lee. (short 'a' like cat)

...instead of two...

Rosa-lee.

ZenNudist · 20/11/2023 08:37

I prefer Rosarie (rose-arr-ree) I have a friend with this beautiful name.

Rosalind is also fabulous.

Not so keen on Rosalie. I think people would pronounce it Roz-ah-lee or Rose-ah-lee.

DuchessOfSausage · 20/11/2023 09:27

Rosarie is too close to Rosary

peaceinourtime · 20/11/2023 11:29

Yes like Amelie with the r in front of it. It’s a pretty name. I’ve known a few from older women to young girls. The pronunciation of it is pretty straightforward. Please don’t be put off.

Ramilie? I used to live near Ramiles Road!

SparklingSparkle · 20/11/2023 11:57

I think it's a bit twee. But I love Rosa.

TheBirdintheCave · 20/11/2023 17:13

@Scruffington True 😂 I didn't know how else to describe that there's a pause between the 'rose' and 'a' rather than 'rosa' which you say all as one.

I guess I meant three parts vs two parts rather than three syllables 😅

oldnorsesaga · 21/11/2023 13:04

I like Rosalie with pronunciation similar to Rosa-lee or Roza-lee, with s/z being similar enough to each other
That's just the way I pronounce Rosa part, since I'm not English. Roza as a name is occasionally used as a name here (Croatia) and it also means pink in my language.
I also love Rosalyn, Rosamund and Rosabel.
