Eleanor vs Elenore

Hey guys,

I'm having a girl and me and my partner have decided on the name Eleanor. We both love it and fine with any possible nicknames that may arise from it.

However, we disagree on how to spell it. I envision it as Eleanor but he sees it as Elenore. Both seem to be valid existing spellings and are pronounced the same way and mean the same thing, from what I can tell Elenore is just an alternative spelling.

Just looking for opinions really on which one you prefer/would choose.

Eleanor

Eleanor, without a doubt.

Elenore looks too much like Eeyore.

KatBurglar · 11/11/2023 17:26

Eleanor or Elinor, but never Elenore

RomeoMcFlourish · 11/11/2023 17:26

If you call her Elenore she will spend her life having to correct people who will spell it Eleanor.

Eleanor is the better spelling.

theduchessofspork · 11/11/2023 17:26

Eleanor is pronounced ell-en-uh (or sometimes ell-in-uh) in the UK

Its only in the US it’s pronounced phonetically as ell-an-ore

so if you want that pronunciation go for Eleanore

If you want it pronounced ell-en-uh then use Eleanor

Eleanor is much much nicer than Elenore. Legitimate spelling or not, my brain instantly assumes the person can’t spell the name and just guessed.

Gloschick · 11/11/2023 17:35

My spellcheck actually changes Elenore to Eleanor, so I would stick to the latter. I personally like Elena as well nn Lena.

MaloneMeadow · 11/11/2023 17:39

Eleanor for sure. Elenore looks like a made up spelling and she’d be constantly having to correct people on it. The only other one I’ve seen is Elinor but I think that Eleanor is the nicest by far

Riverlee · 11/11/2023 17:39

Eleanor

i can’t un-see Eeyore with the other spelling now which looks mid-spelt to me

RedCoffeeCup · 11/11/2023 17:40

Eleanor or Elinor both fine, not Elenore.

Expectingb24 · 11/11/2023 17:45

I quite like Elinor spelling. Eleanor is lovely.
Elenore just makes me think of snore

cariadlet · 11/11/2023 17:47

My thoughts exactly!

ValuableLimeLesson · 11/11/2023 17:53

Elenore makes me think that you didn't have the confidence to call her Lenore (which I love - shame it's a fabric conditioner in the UK).

Passepartoute · 11/11/2023 18:04

Eleanor, every time. It's so much nicer.

FallingAutumnLeaf · 11/11/2023 18:06

Eleanor

Appleofmyeye2023 · 11/11/2023 18:10

It’s not the same name

Eleanor - El-anor , nice, lyrical, grown up
Elenor - Eli- nor - sounds like a flipping elephant as will will shortened to eLE the elephant. Just no. Don’t do that to poor kid. You husband needs to learn English

BoleynMemories13 · 11/11/2023 18:16

Eleanor is a much nicer spelling but I dislike the El-eh-nor pronunciation. I much prefer El-eh-nuh, which is how people tend to pronounce it around me. El-eh-nor sounds very posh to my ears.

So I would definitely spell it Eleanor, as the other spelling is awful, but be prepared that not everyone will pronounce it how you want.

Holidayhell22 · 11/11/2023 18:19

Eleanor.
Don’t spell it Elenore it looks like you can’t spell.

anonimoxyz · 11/11/2023 18:57

If you use any spelling other than Eleanor she'll spend her whole life spelling it out which is annoying, provided you're in UK. I hate my name because nobody can spell or pronounce it and it's not a special spelling, just an unusual name

MockneyReject · 11/11/2023 18:59

Yup, like a PP, I instantly saw Eeyore.
Eleanor is spelled Eleanor; Elinor, at a push.

This ⬆️

Plus, I have an Eleanor 😁

Ihatethenewlook · 11/11/2023 21:07

They’re two different names. How are you pronouncing it? On the likely chance that your oh has ballsed the pronunciation up then your spelling is correct. The second one looks like crossed between retire and snore.
