Ava, Una or Oona

Help us decide between these names. Ava is so popular, but we aren't too bothered by that. I like the idea of Vivi as a nickname.

DH loves Una and I'm coming round to the idea but would want to make sure it was pronounced Oona, but not sure if I like that spelling. DH is Irish and wants the traditional Irish spelling of Una, with or without the fada.

Middle name will be Deryn.

Ava. I really dislike Oonagh in all its forms.

StarlightLime · 11/11/2023 12:38

It's pronounced Oona, but if you're using it, spell it Una. Never mind the fada if not in Ireland.
Personally I prefer Ava.

Santaiswashinghissleigh · 11/11/2023 12:40

Ava.. Other 2 look awful written down..

itsmyp4rty · 11/11/2023 12:40

Ava is much prettier. Una sounds really hard to me and I've never liked it.

theduchessofspork · 11/11/2023 12:42

Oona

I really love it

I wouldn’t use Una in the UK because of the Yew-na pronunciation which is appalling

Ava is nice but way overdone - Ida might be an alternative?

theduchessofspork · 11/11/2023 12:43

.. or if you like Vivi, Vivienne is nice

KirstenBlest · 11/11/2023 12:55

I don't like Ava. Una is is quite nice but will get said as Ewe-na not Oona.
I can't see how any of those shorten to Vivi.

Deryn is a bit of an odd choice - it's an informal Welsh word for bird, and doesn't have the best association. Una Deryn is too close to 'un aderyn' (one bird)

MaloneMeadow · 11/11/2023 13:07

Ava is so much nicer, how about Eva as an option? May be biased as that’s my DD’s middle name! I’m Irish and really don’t like Una in any form, it’s very much a middle aged woman’s name to me

ILoveaSunflower · 11/11/2023 13:10

What about Genevieve if you want to call her Vivi?

SisterMichaelsHabit · 11/11/2023 13:12

The fada will actually cause problems if you ever go to live in Ireland. Precisely zero banks (and virtually no public services) accept fada or even hyphens (or spaces) in names in their computer systems. I had major problems with this when we lived there and had to guess at how to correctly spell my own name when government bodies had helpfully re-spelled it for me in new and interesting ways.

I love Oona because it reminds me of Puffin Rock. I think Una is a bit dated and some people might pronounce it "Yoo-na". Not a fan of Ava, there's millions of them and they were mostly born in 2017.

BoleynMemories13 · 11/11/2023 13:15

Ava is much prettier. Popularity has never bothered me and differs from area to area anyway. It's not popular around me, I've never taught one. I wouldn't say Vivi is a natural shortening though, although nicknames can obviously be whatever you want. I would assume Vivi to be short for Vivienne. I wouldn't shorten Ava at all.

I would say people are far more likely to pronounce Una as Oo-na than Ewe-na though, so I would definitely go for this spelling if you pick this name. Oona is awful.

Liv999 · 11/11/2023 13:16

Ava, I'm Irish and really dislike Una and Oona, as a previous post said its a middle aged woman's name in Ireland

BiggletonUnited · 11/11/2023 13:38

Not sure about Vivi as a nickname for Ava.

What about Olivia Deryn? Olivia as Vivi works.

Olivia means olive tree and Deryn means bird so you have a bird in an olive tree.

LylaLee · 11/11/2023 13:41

Just call her Vivi then

peaceinourtime · 11/11/2023 14:12

Vivi is not a natural shorting for Ava the only ones I can think of a Aves or Ave quite boring really. To get Vivi you will most likely have to use Vivianne. Una would have to be spelt Oona else it will be a lifetime of you-na. Yes people you see regularly will learn but those you don’t or people who want to do and think it’s a joke will keep to you-na.

wited · 11/11/2023 14:42

I'm not seeing Vivi from Ava.

Una is nice but it'll be yew naa a lot over here.

IHeartGeneHunt · 11/11/2023 14:45

I love Oona.

Eiris · 11/11/2023 18:52

I love Una however you spell it.
It’s a classic, much too big to be categorised.
I love Oonagh for the loopy signature potential.
Uaine and Uaithne are pretty too.

junebirthdaygirl · 11/11/2023 19:26

I love Una...as Ava is just too common recently.
Could spell it Oonagh.
It's lrish for Agnes

ChickenBhunaandChips · 11/11/2023 20:02

I don’t like Oona at all. Where I live Ava has been done to death. It’s so popular it’s overused.

Cant work out Vivi from Ava, it’s not remotely similar.

Daisybuttercup12345 · 11/11/2023 20:42

Ava.
Really dislike Una, Oona and similar.

FannyBawz · 11/11/2023 20:44

Vivienne surely! Ditch the rest!

Olika · 11/11/2023 20:50

Ava, really dislike the rest.

LittleGreenDuck · 11/11/2023 21:57

What about Ona? Oh-nu

BodyKeepingScore · 12/11/2023 10:58

Not seeing how you're getting nn "Vivi" from Ava?
