Hello
We have a baby boy due soon and are torn between Eden and Eben. We love both but can't decide between the two! Could you help pick your fav of the two? 😀

What? Neither - don’t be crazy! Give the poor boy a chance in life

camberlian · 07/11/2023 10:45

Eden pronounced like the footballer? Or ee-den. Eben is nicer but I've only known it as a Nn for Ebeneezer.

RedCoffeeCup · 07/11/2023 10:45

Eden

booktokbear · 07/11/2023 10:52

Is it Eh - ben or Ee-ben?

I think most people will assume Eden is a girl. I'm not keen on it for either a boy or a girl sorry.

There are so many more nicer names imo.

Pinkdelight3 · 07/11/2023 10:55

Neither. Eden isn't really a boys' name to me and Eben isn't a nice sound, it looks like a typo. Why do that to him?

lilyblue5 · 07/11/2023 10:56

I’ve always loved Eden (is a boys/unisex name pronounced like Aiden but with E). Prepare for everyone to spell it wrong.
Eban (like Evan with an v) is also lovely.
both great names IMO.

hotblacktea · 07/11/2023 11:00

are you rugby fans ?

eben etzebeth is one of the best players in the world, instantly recognizable

Tosnoreornottosnore · 07/11/2023 11:01

Not a fan op but at the end of the day it’s your call.

FayCarew · 07/11/2023 11:03

E's are good. Of the 2, Eben but neither are to my taste. Ethan, Evan or Euan are better.

Pinkdelight3 · 07/11/2023 11:13

Okay, but if you want him to be called Aiden, better to call him that unless he wants to spent his life saying: "No it's pronounced Aiden not Eden."

I agree, however a lot of people like their child’s name to be more unique.

for example Ayla/Isla.

SisterhoodNotCisterhood · 07/11/2023 11:25

If you child has to put an extra sentence with their name, please don't do it.

"Like XXXX but spelled YYYY"
"XXXX but with an E"
"It's Bob, but with a capital 6"

SM4713 · 07/11/2023 11:26

I like Eden, but for a girl

Never heard of Eban, but looks/sounds like a misspelling of Evan or Ebony. It just sounds like a nn. Like someone else said: Ebenezer. (E's are good, E's are good.....) 😆

lilyblue5 · 07/11/2023 11:29

OP just choose the name you like.
I have very very standard names for my kids - I asked on mumsnet and got insane replies.
Just do eenie meanie miney mo.

Everytreeinthewoods · 07/11/2023 11:31

I have an Eben (short for Ebenezer). I love it (obviously) but there have been more pronunciation issues (saying Ee-ben rather than our preferred Eb-en) and misspellings (Eban) and misshearings (Evan, Ebony) than I imagined. I imagine some of the issues would be the same with Eden though and any name that's slightly less common. I would pick it again, although Eden is nice too.

Anonymousismyname · 07/11/2023 11:36

Eben for Ebenezer... please don't set your child up to possibly being called/nicknamed scrooge.

That's a joke that will take form possibly in the future.... just call him Ben.

MrsCarson · 07/11/2023 11:36

I've only known one Eben, he had parents from Mexico his name wasn't short for anything I wasn't keen on it. other kids kept calling him Ebay.

DryRobeWanker · 07/11/2023 11:48

I know someone with an Eben.
She's forever putting snarky comments on FB about people pronouncing it incorrectly and it being Ee-ben not Eh-bun.
I like the name, it's quite strong and I like the literary connection.

Eden has a very different feel to me, maybe because it's a unisex name or maybe as it seems very religious to me. I think I prefer it for a girl.

EarthlyNightshade · 07/11/2023 11:53

Are these pronounced to rhyme with each other?
I am imagining Garden of Eden and Garden of Eben.
If I saw written down I would assume Eden was a girl and Eben was a boy.

CreationNat1on · 07/11/2023 11:58

Eben was on my list, but felt it would be a burdensome name, constantly explaining it. I went for Rowan instead.

FayCarew · 07/11/2023 12:00

A friend has an Eben, said as Ebben

Whataretheodds · 07/11/2023 12:03

Eden is already a word (and a name) with an established pronunciation. Trying to spell it like that but pronounce it differently is just setting your child up for difficulty unnecessarily.

If you want Aiden/Aidan go with that.

Eben is unusual in the UK, easy to spell, easy to say.

He’ll be retiring soon though.

... unless you decide it's not said that way, like PP's friend:

ElleW91 · 07/11/2023 12:16

Eden pronounced like the garden of Eden.
Eben pronounced Eb-ben.

Football and rugby fans! Eden Hazard and Eben Etzebeth both strong sports males who rock the name IMO.

We live in Wales so there are definitely a lot harder names to say/pronounce, so we are used to it here.
