Middle name Beryl

We have just found out we are having a girl!! Due in March.

Now we have the first name sorted. I would really love to have my Grandmothers name as her middle name, however the Name is Beryl. Very old lady and not quite chic.

Any ideas I can get around this as alternative or something that makes it more current like Beryl - rose or grey. Well I dunno, I'm stuck!

I think this is your only hope. Or did she have a middle name?

Mind you, it won’t sound so grannyish to her generation - I now know three little Enids not to mention a billion Ediths.

Actually Beryl comes from a light green semi precious stone.. so you could go for Emerald? It’s quite the leap though..,

There is no point trying to find an alternative if you are wanting to remember a loved family member. Bea (for example) is nothing like Beryl

I like beryl. It's fresh, no one else is using it. Don't hyphenate it with something FGS, that makes it so cheap! Just go with Beryl or choose something totally different, something vaguely related isn't going to honour her

Beryl as a first name would be an actual crime.

Beryl as a middle name is quite sweet. It will be obvious it's in honour of a beloved relative. Go with Beryl rather than trying to find some other name with a tentative link.

Beryl is a perfectly good name. It'd sound really awful and crass if you double-barrelled it with a chav suffix.

I'd go for Beryl, confidently. Make it clear who you're naming her after, and be proud of it.

Just use Beryl. No one ever uses middle names so it's fine

I don’t love beryl. I was saddled with Margaret as a middle name and always hated it until I changed it as an adult. People used to laugh at me for it.

I actually really like the name Beryl and think you should go for it! My daughter has my beloved grandma’s name as her middle name. It’s extremely uncool but it made the original so happy when we announced her name. I love it for this reason. Nobody uses middle names regularly anyway.

Don’t use Beryl. It’s awful. I’d go with Bea or her middle name. Or something else entirely.

Go with Beryl, it sounds like all the other 'old' names to me and a Beryl is a jewel.

Beryl is a rather lovely gemstone and actually quite a pretty name. One person's outdated is another person's modern. Just use it.

Names go in and out of fashion. Edith was once hopelessly old fashioned and is now in vogue.

As others have said, it’s the name of a gem, and the name of someone precious to you. It’s a very apt name for your little one.

I think you'll be ahead of the curve with Beryl! I never thought, a few years ago, that I'd be teaching teenagers called Elsie, Mabel, Wilfred and Stanley. Yet here we are!
Plus, it's a middle name, so less impactful.

Beryl Burton was awesome. Excellent pedigree even it wasn't your Nan's name.

Beryl is a lot better than some of the old lady names around now, like Maud, Enid and Ethel. My Mum had a friend called Beryl, who was known as Berry. She was very glamorous and great fun. I’d go for Beryl as a middle name. If you want a role model, how about Beryl the Peril?!
