We have a little girl with an unusual welsh name.

I'm pregnant and we're not finding the sex out.

My fave name for a girl is Manon ( I didn't realise it was French until recently) I'm welsh and my husband is a little tiny bit French so it works for both of us which is nice)

my husbands fave is Lucia- Loo See Ah. I'm just not sure if I love it.

Anyone have any suggestions please?

I’d pronounce Lucia as Loo-chee-a

nobleisle · 16/10/2023 13:38

@DustyLee123 there's a few ways to pronounce. We'd say loo see ah

My point is that you, and she, are going to be constantly telling people how to pronounce it.

Loo-see-ah (Spanish) pronunciation does seem to be getting more popular, it used to be usually the Italian (Loo-chi-ah) in the UK, so I’m not sure I’d worry too much about that (although you might also get the awful American Loo-sha).

Anyway Lucia is nice but I love Manon - it’s unusual in a good way, and as far as I know it’s Welsh as well as French. Sometimes in France it’s used as a diminutive for Marie/Marianne, so you do that if you’re worried it’s too unusual.

I love the name Lucia! Where I come from we celebrate the saint Lucia with a special feast, and we pronounce the name similar to loo see ah.

Manon is a lovely name, too!

Good Luck!

But LOO-see-a or loo-SEE-a? It’s a tricky one! But people will just copy how you pronounce it ultimately. I like it!

KirstenBlest · 17/10/2023 07:23

Manon works in Welsh and French, apart from the pronunciation being different.
Manon is very ordinary in Wales though. I must know dozens of them.

Lucia can be LU-cy-a, Loo-SEE-a, Loosha or Lootch-EE-a, so I'd avoid it.

A breton name would work. Gwen or Nolwenn, perhaps.

Lolxe · 17/10/2023 15:08

Lucia is a pretty name but yes lots of different pronunciations. Would you consider Lucy instead?

Not everyone.
The biggest issue us that whenever anyone sees the name, they will read it in 'their' pronunciation.
If I saw the name, I'd say it as Lucy-a unless corrected, but I say Mapp & Lootch-ee-a, and S'nt Loosha for the island.

I love the name Lucia (Loo-chee-a) but I couldn’t bare having to correct people which would definitely happen!

peaceinourtime · 19/10/2023 08:46

Ffion

nobleisle · 20/10/2023 19:32

I have to correct my daughters name all the time and it is tiring. I've told my husband that I just can't see myself with a Lucia and he is disappointed so now I really have to find anew name. I'm not due for a while tho.

I love Ffion but I can't use it. I would love another welsh name but I can't find any I like. And all the girls name ive just heard a million times. There are some lovely ones suggested. I really like Luella!

If you like Luella you might like Llywela

nobleisle · 22/10/2023 13:01

I do actually like Llywela thank you!

What about Lucille?
